Keep you're shirt on - you haven't missed much, really.  P and I watched it the last time I was up there and were both pretty unimpressed.  Eye candy and little more.

I use them all the time. I collect donation money then bring it to coinstar. I pony up the fee so the recipient doesn't get shorted. I also used to save my change all year then bring it to coinstar to put toward our camping trip. It used to be enough to pay for 3 or 4 nights. Nowadays I don't collect change because I usually scrape it together to try and buy some food. Those machines are embarrassing anyway. They are so noisy and they just seem to shout - "Hey, everybody - look, here's a poor person who can't buy food with real money!"

I use them sometimes, too. Usually when I've got enough change to fill up my piggy bank - I generally only carry a couple of quarters, so anything smaller goes in the piggy bank.

be careful with admissions like that you could find yourself being extradited to a Milwaukie suburb for a crime you only thought about committing!

Yeah I've had even banks here get huffy about breaking a 20 like it's some great burden. When it's a no-skin-off-their-nose situation like putting a piggy bank's worth of change thru their sorter (takes about 20 seconds), I make it plain to them that I will not hesitate to occupy somebody's (preferably several peoples') time so that NOT doing the simple service costs them far more than just shutting up and doing it. I don't back down until someone gets on the phone and uses the word "incident" or maybe "situation."

My bank has a couple of times a week when you can bring in loose change for counting. They will count it while you wait, or put it in line and just deposit it to your account. I have found that if you don't wait on it, you will not get the golf tees, paper clips, poker chips and cookie fortunes back from your pile of change.

There are a number of people who don't have bank accounts. And there are a lot of people who don't plan ahead. Those are the people I see using the coinstar machines a lot. I don't know the details, but I would expect that they are still getting a fee from the other side when a gift card is issued.

Just to kickstart the threadjack? WTF is coinstar? Who puts enough money in them to make it pay? Who would put $100 worth of coins in one just to get $92 in bills out?

I have used them a few times over the years. I once took the change that had been building up in a drawer to cash it in, and ended up with almost $300 that I used as my spending money on vacation. They charged 9%, but it was worth it with the other option being taking it all to the bank. Something kind of satisfying about sliding all those coins in and watching the count grow.

Oh, and the next time I opened the drawer where the coins had been, I almost flung it across the room becuase it was so much lighter than it used to be.
