I am the pride at the heart of a man
I am a refuge in a dangerous land
I am a wall or a line in the sand
I am a gathering
I am a stand
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Not you
I am the daylight when darkness draws near
I am a signal that's heard without ears
I am the rapture and I am the tears
I am a centre regardless of years
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold em, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Not you
Love is real
Love is real
Love is real
Yeah, love is real
I am a refuge in a dangerous land
I am a wall or a line in the sand
I am a gathering
I am a stand
Hold me, hold me
Well who's going to hold me now?
Hold me, hold me

Love the Chameleons - brings me back to discovering “alternative” music in college.
Would love to hear more of their early works - Script of the Bridge, and Strange Times.
May have to go off RP and listen to them again.
Great guitar, bass and drums, not so sure about the chorus...
In 1982 i have been unemployed for three month and used to listen to radio all night long. It was the beginning of the "free radio" in France and some of them where very amateur. "Radio éphemére" used to diffuse good music all night long but they never tell the name of the band they played. And everyday i used to hear a very great song without knowing who where singing, at the end i was totally obsessed by this song and i was waiting for. Years passed...One day, i see a big guy in the street with a ghetto blaster on his shoulder playing this famous song. I ran after him and ask him who it was? He told me "Secret skin" from the Chameleons of course". And since these guys never left me.

Great!! I never heard of them before. Thank You RP!
Luv it - thought it was Spinal Tap for a moment
well..it´s not something like "script of the bridge" but still more than good.
Nice song! I also love the idea that the band called their album 'Why Call It Anything?', as if they were sitting around brainstorming what to call it and then someone said the phrase that became the album's name. That's meta
Kind of liking it, but so repetitive it gets tiresome for me.
First I have heard of this band, how did I miss them? I do have to say that this album cover gives me the heebie jeebies.
first time I hear this band on the radio!!! My old favorite band
About 2 years ago I discovered the Chameleons and wondered how I missed these guys in the 80s. Script of the Bridge is a phenomenal LP. More of that on RP, please? Guitar soundscapes, like the Church, another favorite.

The Chameleons are another one of those great unsung (under appreciated) bands, kinda like Catherine Wheel. Here's hoping they get their proper due down the road.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Catherine Wheel
This song has guitar that is unmistakably like Pink Floyd's Run Like Hell.

Blimey, Due South! Whatever happened to that?
Great tune, by the way. Love the vibe.
ps don't stare at that clown for too long - the face moves behind the red stripes ...
Agreed! I used to love that show. I always promised myself that if I ever got rich, among the various classic cars I'd buy, there would have to be a dark green '71 Buick Riviera, just like Ray's. One can dream, eh?
OMG I never even noticed that clown, haha!

Love it. Magical guitar & bass.
Post-punk, eh?
Frankly I have no idea what means.
Regardless, good piece. Transy.

a dirge
In Shreds is by far the best song by The Chameleons
The longer it goes, the more I drop the rating.
Very nice
Vaguely reminiscent of Tool.
Odd tune indeed.
Love is real? Is that an epiphany or the confession of every new Hateful Anonymous member?

Nice use of the delay pedal on the guitar...
This is odd. The songs before and after are right (Lord Huron and Decemberists), but I'm hearing Peter Gabriel "I Grieve".

Is the rest of this album or any of their other work like this? Love the Dick Dale sound of the guitar.

I like!
I can hear influences from "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" from Pink Floyd in this song so that must be a good thing. I think I like the Chameleons...
Wow haven't heard these guys for ages. Used to really be into "What Does Anything Mean Basically?" in college - great album!
awoke to foreign feeling surroundings and suspect I got lost deep into something surreal..
Something right out of the 60's

A little too... well, not enough, you know...
Deliciously creepy.
Forgot this station - somehow, can't imagine how now. Last week I received an email out of the blue from RP and I immediately went there & started listening, was like so happy all the end of last week. Think for some crazy reason I had switched to LastFM..not sure why but am back & Bill is the best DJ en todo el mundo! I learn & experience so much here that would otherwise never happen.....all day everyday - like so much on here but for instance never heard of Chameleons, just one artist/group of many though.
Too great to hear the "Chameleons" on RP! One of my favorite band, unfortunately almost unknown here in France. Thank's RP and more Chameleons!
Sounds to me very REMish. That's good!
GREAT-GREAT-GREAT!!!
HEAVY STUFF - VERY TRIPPY - VERY SPECIAL!
DIRTY ROCK HOW IT SHOULD BE!
IMPRESSIVE!
= 9
Awfully interesting stuff! Well-done, with appropriate notions of psychedelia and pop...and some fragrant hints of Stone Roses at the end...
Wow, first time hearing this. Really grabs me. Love this brooding, slightly melancholy, yet suspenseful feeling. I can see this as a soundtrack to a video where a heroine is searching for the missing piece to a mystery.

This is a good one but I'm surprised he's never played "Tears" from Strange Times. Great song that actually got this band a little airplay at the time.

I agree with your assessment, but it's strange that you mention both of those bands in the same sentence. It made me think of The Chamaeleon Church. That's a moody, young Chevy Chase looming in the background.
That's pretty cool.

A great band with their own identifiable sound. The Chameleons and The Church make some of the most interesting guitar-based soundscapes.

Great band from back in the day
Great song off a great album. Yes, that Clown on the cover is pretty creepy!
This is a very compelling song - I like it a lot! (That clown gives me the creeps, though...)
Why do I always think of Spinal Tap when this song starts?
Not that that's a bad thing...

LOVE the jangly guitar outro.
So moody — love it!
Superb
but the bass line is sort of Fools in Love by JJ— no?
to be listened at full volume

reminds me of goth talk from SNL.
Always loved this one.....
This is good...C'mon Romeo sound off !

Nice groove.
finally Chameleons, so happy, how about up the down escalator?
We must have sent about simultaneously with our notes on April 4 regarding the R Plant sound.

Hardcore fans of alternative music consider this one of the most influential and underrated bands of the 1980s. Some of their other songs are AMAZING. Either way, glad to see such an obscure pick from RP.
Sounded a bit Robert Plant-like. Nice.

Love the Chameleons! One of my favorite bands ever. They definitely have an eighties sound. But it doesn't sound dated. It sounds just as sincere and pure now as it did then.

Sounds like The Smiths in a good mood.
The Smiths are never in a good mood.
That is what is cool about The Smiths and bad about this song.

Reminds me of a riff from ''Every Breath You Take'' by the Police.
Very cool sound, nice guitar effects (not overdone).

"Don't Fall" is also a winner from that album.
Wow, this reminds me a lot of Puressence - especially
the guitar work. Maybe I should try to upload something
by them again.
Nice! I really like this. But then, I always did like Love.
