Let us put men and women together
See which one is smarter
Some say men, but I say no
The women got the men like a puppet show
It ain't me - it's the people that say
That the men are leading the women astray
But I say that the women today
Are smarter than the men in every way
That's right, the women are smarter
That's right, the women are smarter
That's right, the women are smarter
The women are smarter that's right
(that' right)
Little boy sit on the corner and cry
Big man come and he ask him why
Says I can't do what the big boys do
Man sat down and he cried too
It ain't me, but the people who say
That the men are leading the women astray
But I say that the women today
Are smarter than the men in every way
That's right, the women are smarter
That's right, the women are smarter
That's right, the women are smarter
The women are smarter that's right
(that' right)
Ever since the world began
Women been imitating the ways of men
But listen, boys cause I've got a plan
Give it up, don't try to understand
It ain't me - it's the people that say
That the men are leading the women astray
But I say that the women today

My final--of many--Dead shows were July 1989. This recording puts me right on back there.
Not my favorite version, but still a 10.

Why so serious?
How stupid are the comments for this song? Well, not all are reflexively bashing simply because they decided at some point in their miserable shrunken lives that anything by the Grateful Dead is unacceptable, etc. BUT: This is a cover of a much older song. Have any of you bright folks heard of Harry Belafonte? If you want to complain about the lyrics, it might be useful to know who wrote them, or originally sang them. I do not care who does or does not like the band, but the response to Grateful Dead music, by a disappointingly large portion of the log-onners (listener seems too generous), is a bit like not liking a person because of his ancestry, or disliking a musician because of his political beliefs. Just hearing them seems to elicit irrational hatred (I do not use the word to describe music, but commenters on this site sure do) from some. I feel a bit sorry for you.

Great version of a great tune. Don't hate.
I would rather shove thumbtacks into my gums than hear this song again.

I was 'groovin'' with it up until yer man started singing then I just had to mute as it was hurting my brain. Normally I wouldn't give the Dead the time of day but the instrumentals were fine and I was just about to hit the 5 rating when the shouting started, which knocked off 3. Sorry. 8 for the album cover, though :o)
Had 2 give it a 10 just to counteract all those 1's. C'mon people, get a clue. It's cool, if just for Jerry's excellent, workmanlike GTR solo!
It's just supposed to be a fun live song. What's with all the 1's?
Lighten up, people!

You didn't specify your gender in your profile but I'm guessing that you're taking a little ribbing at your own expense. Very nice.
Ha ha ha! I guess I never listened to this song very closely (or looked at the title). I always thought they were singing "That's right, the women are smaller." What's that about women being smart?

Um, that should be "If I were not smarter...." It's the subjunctive, Smarty.

Been a long time since I've heard this tune. Reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, who was too smart for her own good.

After 40 albums they ran out of words,,,so that's why it only seems repetitive......

That's RIGHT!
Joyful noise. Brent shines. Always had a soft spot for the new guy. (To all those who gave this a 1...your anti-GD bias is ridiculous).

Even if RP didn't play the Dead it would still be my favorite radio station... the fact that the do is a pleasure I never take for granted. Thank you Bill and Radio Paradise!
Brent...THAT'S RIGHT! Now for "I Will Take You Home"...TNX RP!!!!!!

Love the Brent era of the Grateful Dead and how he would just belt it out. Uncle John's Band and Dear Mr. Fantasy are others that come to mind. I always thought he added a nice flavor.

Of all the Dead songs to choose from, why this one?

RP's comment board could sure stand more women on them, if you know what I mean.

ah summmatime!
Fond memories(or whatever is left of them) of them doing this. Have seen them play this many times-always gets people up on their feet.
so which is smarter ? the woman, or the man who tells her she is ?
A concert favorite. Sing it Brent, and RIP.
