All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true...I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
Yeah you do and I was made for you
You see the smile that's on my mouth
Is hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess
No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through like you do
And I was made for you...
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to

Oh yes, it's true...

Lucinda Williams' voice is soft and silky by comparison...

Seriously.
It reminds me of Gianna Nannini, a very shitty (and of course successful) italian singer...

From Wikipedia: Carlile describes the vocals as "technically wrong but emotionally right".

Understatement is a form of speech which contains an expression of less strength than what would be expected. This is not to be confused with euphemism, where a polite phrase is used in place of a harsher or more offensive expression.
Geeze, I thought she got booted from the local tryouts for American Idol. Yeeecccchhhh. That's pretty much caterwauling, that one.

This must be one of the worst songs I ever heard on RP.
If I had pipes like that I'd probably use them too. Nothing wrong with that - you either like it or you don't.
I like it.

Wasn't bad at all. In fact, I think it was "Pretty Good".

Nice to see a positive comment for this song among the hate. I like your take on it - this song is about a journey. Good tune.
Her voice and delivery fits the lyric perfectly - experience, recovery, renewal - a survivor's voice.

Worked for me.
Oh no, you did not just scream like that. 3=>2
I like it...bit too much shrieking though

This girl never gets under a 7. In her 20's with a voice seemingly riddled with years of experience, cigarettes, and whiskey.
i like the part when she doesn't sing.

Hah!

Why her attempt to put your auditory system in full distress until the last 3 seconds of the song? I almost get a feeling she might have a decent voice hidden underneath the screeching. To bad, the song itself is likable.
Whew... glad that one's over.

Saw her perform this live — such raw power. Whether or not you like the style, she's got a genuine ability to deliver a song.

She's trying too hard to be Janis Joplin on this one.
Teeny bopper name. But not at all a teeny bopper voice.
please noooo!!!!!
this rocks beautifully.

Wasn't this song in a commercial? I remember really liking it then. Maybe Cadillac?

She would do well singing with Aerosmith...after they retire.
When did RP start playing Duh Non Blondes??
Thanks for this, Bill.
C'mon...this song rates better than a 5.8
Good lyrics,nice mood change
I'd rate it higher but I first heard it on a car commercial.

Ouch... the vocals!
Don't like screaming, tearing, vocal chords.
It's simple and poignant, and she sings it like she means it. That is why it is a great song.
Ouch... the vocals!

like the voice - even the small imperfections are quite in keeping with the rest of the song

This was used very effectively IMO on a Chevy commercial (I think Chevy) last year. Not that it made me buy a Chevy, but I enjoyed the commercial.
Sounds like watered-down female version of Muse...
