A New Jersey State Police source told CNN the pilot radioed to air traffic controllers that he had experienced a bird strike — when a bird or flock of birds is sucked into the jet engine — and declared an emergency. The pilot tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the Hudson, the Times reported. The Times said it was below 20 degrees in New York at the time the plane went down. (water was 41 degrees) A couple of minutes after takeoff, "we just heard a loud bang," Panero said. "The plane shook a bit and ... you could smell smoke and fire and immediately the plane started turning," Panero said. "All of a sudden, the captain came on and said, 'Brace for landing,' and that's when we knew we were going down."

The FAA confirmed US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 headed from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, was down in the river following a failed takeoff. The U.S. Coast Guard said units were also responding, and a ferry on site was dropping life jackets into the water. The plane approached the water at a gradual angle and made a big splash, according to a witness watching from an office building. "It wasn't going particularly fast. It was a slow contact with the water that it made," the witness, Ben VonKlemperer, told CNN. LINK

OMG....I hope this is true that everyone got out. I can't even imagine how cold that water is! It's a good thing there are already so many ferries in the area.

... sounds like pretty good news among the bad. Great that the thing didn't break up, when you think of how light they try to make the damn things, it would be quite a feat. Hope this is true and everyone is ok.

A U.S. Airways airplane has crashed into the Hudson River, CBS 2 has learned. The plane appears to be in one piece and passengers are being evaucated by rescue teams. Officials tell CBS 2 the airplane is Flight 1549, an Airbus 380 that took off from La Guardia Aiport. There are reports that there were about 60 people on board. There are reports that a bird strike may have caused the plane to go down, meaning a bird may have entered the engine, causing a malfunction. There is no word on injuries to passengers. The plane is floating upright in the water near the USS Intrepid.

Live on CNN right now.
Plane is currently floating in the river.
A "small commercial plane". Looks like a commuter jet.
One report I heard said 153 on board.
edit: Airbus A320 ?
