Why do you charge? I bought some items from a site for my kid and it was an amount that should have covered the $15.00 that the store wanted for using paypal. I canceled the order.

concur- if all the merchant processing business's out there worked faster and more together- it probably wouldn't take as long.

I'm glad I have the merchant account via PayPal- makes it easier for customers or people wanting to USE their CC.

also- I'd MUCH rather take a CHECK than a CC- however most people hardly carry their checkbooks anymore....

Have been using it for business transactions for years. (since 1997)
as well for web design clients to set up shopping cart on their websites.  (whether a sale or donation or subscription)
it is great for all sides- but customer support is a PITA. so I really empathize with you OTD! and others...

Couple weeks ago after not finding the answer to my question/concern for a client (clients authorize me to their account, no access to financial, just API and authorization so I can make code for the buttons/processing) had to spend about two hours to resolve  the problem. (client had spent about an hour as well).

Then somehow from the work with the client, my personal business bank account (which is tied in with my PayPal) was refused. Had to spend another 45 minutes with PP, then half hour on phone with my bank to resolve that problem in order for PayPal to recognise my business account. (according to my bank, it was "an odd fluke" as to why my business account was not being recognised, she said she saw it happen to another customer not to long ago)
I can relate all to well to the great advantages and the disadvantages and PITA customer support. However hands down, probably the most reliable way to proceed with transactions whether you have an account or just desire to purchase something and the vendor has chosen PayPal as form of payment. (also allows customer or person to do such on their own time, from convenience of their home or wherever)

Also, if you have a small business and desire to sell on the innerwebs- PayPal is the cheapest way to be able to process a credit card (from a merchant point of view) Otherwise you have to apply and obtain a certificate and that can cost in the thousands. (even if you have a business account with your bank)
Last I researched, for my business it was best to run all innerweb sales via PayPal, for in person or phone transactions , I use the business merchant account via my bank (and yes folks, still use the 'ol fashioned knuckle buster to process Visa/MC (with a phone auth.)... no monthly equipment fee, and less amount charged pr transaction - since 1994) Have had only two problems in all those years, all customer end (one was a fraud via stolen CC, the other was customer who purchased piece at an art show, told Visa she didn't like it, and was refunded the money and kept the art piece)

It seems that customers want ease of purchase via their CC cards- and retailers/business's have to keep up. In order for me to get paid, have to have the easiest formats for the customer to make such.

PITA-it is, however also a way to make a transaction via computer to almost anyone in the world.

If a client wants to pay with paypal, I lose about 5% of my fee to paypal because that's about what they charge. Of course, I can raise my fee by that amount if I choose because I can charge whatever I want. I can ask the client to send if check if they don't mind. Some clients have already figured out for themselves that they can select the 'gift' option when they pay and avoid the fee but I wouldn't ask a client to do that. Sometimes it's worth losing the 5% to be able to get the client to commit right away by sending me a deposit. And all-in-all, I think it's well worth the fees I pay to be able to accept credit and debit cards over the internet.

I don't think Manbird charges people extra for using PayPal. PayPal takes a percentage of the total, tho, so if you owed him $200 he's saying it would be worth it for him if you sent a check for $200.
 
I have seen merchants that charge for using PayPal but I really don't understand that. Especially on smaller amounts owed, a merchant doesn't want to spend a lot of time chasing down a $20 payment so even though the % PayPal takes is high on small charges, it's still worth it. Sell something for $20 and spend half an hour billing it out and reconciling etc. Vs Sell it for $20, pay PayPal $2.50 and get $17.50 today.
