http://www.phillymag.com/news/2014/09/17/report-suspects-gay-bashing-will-meet-police-today/ Suspects in Gay Bashing Will Meet Police Today kind of an incredible story.... basically two gay men were beat up by a crowd of assholes on Saturday night, a pic was released by the Philly police, which was all over FB yesterday. Someone (a reality start? Real Housewives of NJ?) discovered a pic of the same people eating out earlier that night on FB.... tweeted it..... and now they're turning themselves in.

A decline in the demand for paper products risks a decline in sustainably managed re-growth forests. Use print, it is tangible, it is effective in getting your message across and when recycled it will come back to us as paper or board. Interesting logic. Apparently a young rapidly growing tree absorbs more Co2 than a mature tree, so so far so good. I guess the problem not addressed is how much Co2 is produced converting those trees in the bit of printed paper on your desk.

hippiechick wrote: Why would a person buy a heavy book if s/he could download it onto a reader, have the reader read it, have a children's book be interactive, thereby entertaining as well as educating. And if you want to print it out, you can print it from your own printer at home. I have read articles about 3-D printers that will "print" a table right in your own home.
Remember cd's? I used to go into Borders and listen to music on their stations, then buy a few cd's. Who does that now? Well, nobody, because Borders doesn't even carry cd's for the most part any more.
I remember when every household had a set of encyclopedias. Parents saved their pennies to be able to afford a set for their children.
How many people still have land lines? Phone books?
I went to a seminar once where the guy said you can be the best buggy whip manufacturer in the world, but if no one needs a buggy whip...
I would bet money on print as we know it being completely gone within 10 years.
I have to say I much prefer a real book for literature, though not for reference. Mostly because it would be rare to find a single reference book that contained all the info I require, and of course relying on a single source is dangerous. I'm not sure I know anyone who ever had a set of encyclopedias! Not only were they expensive, they would be out of date as soon as they were published. Pre-web, I'd go to the library and get several books on a subject, now I google and use an aggregate of the information found. I believe print has a long life yet, it's demise was predicted when TV took off, as was the death of the cinema when Video's arrived - both are selling better than ever (though I note there was a 5% fall in US cinema attendance last year). Future-gazing has proved to be somewhat unreliable so far, I don't see that changing.
