You may like his 'New England' number from 1976, David Robinson was still playing drums with him on this album.

Which is a great song but he stubbornly refuses to play it. I have heard stories about him doing it at small gatherings and really riffing on the locations etc. and having a lot of fun with it, but there aren't any recordings that I'm aware of that are under 40 years old...

Wow! I used to love the Rubinoos and when I heard a couple of Jojo songs years later with obviously the same band, I was over the moon.

It occurred to me in a post-New Year's Eve sluggishness that The Modern Lovers were Massachusetts' answer to the Ramones. "Government Center" the song is almost as bad as the collection of Brutalist monstrosities going by the same name.

Jonathan was actually more a part of the Velvet Underground scene, but yeah when punk happened, he was already starting to minimize the electric rock band sound. He had Robinson playing drums with I think rolled-up towels on cardboard boxes at one point. It was that experimental attitude that won him a few followers who appreciated the simplicity of the Ramones too.

The original Modern Lovers actually preceded The Ramones but their first album (produced by John Cale in 1972) was not released until several years later - by then the original band had broken up.  Keyboardist Jerry Harrison went on to join Talking Heads and drummer David Robinson eventually co-founded The Cars.
