Reportedly there's a list of something like 13k words which are allowed as guesses, but the answers are drawn from a subset of common words (possibly chosen by the author's girlfriend). There are 2315 words in this list.

Yeah, not yet anyhow. I imagine it won't use obscure "crossword-style" or Scrabble® words, but I haven't seen any info on how it generates the word of the day. I assume it's a random, 5-letter-word generator and maybe they alter the word if it makes one that's too obscure.
*edit - They did use "ULTRA" a few days ago, which seems more like a prefix than a word - but it is a word.

You should be given a medal to even find that many valid words (with the three ending letters nailed on the first guess) before finding the right one at 6.
