People in the USA believe in well-defined economic property rights except they also believe in important ethnic, racial and other sectarian exceptions to those rights. I suppose that is in part due to the glorification of ethnic cleansing in popular American culture.

But if the so-called Yellow Vests movement wants to push now for a full cancellation of the increase, it just got some data to support its case: France had the highest tax burden across the 34 OECD nations last year, according to a report published Wednesday. The ratio increased to 46.2 percent, pushing France above Denmark, which had led the ranking for more than a decade.

yep, I wouldn't see it as an opposition to a carbon tax per se as much as frustration at an increase in taxes for the lower three-quarters of the population while real incomes have been sliding for a long time and the "rich" are given tax breaks. or in a word: inequality.
