Yes, but my understanding is that the first baseman waves off the pitcher if the first baseman is going to the base and not in need of lobbing it to the pitcher. Here, it appeared that Cole just assumed that is what Rizzo was going to do and stopped running. Also, if Rizzo always lobs it to the pitcher, why was Cole assuming otherwise?
Right all around but JFC it's the World Series, don't you bust ass to the base no matter what? I just thought it was weird that Cole gets all the heat when he (and I agree) clearly thought that Rizzo had the better shot.
People are giving Gerritt Cole a lot of flak for not covering first but apparently Rizzo never takes the ball to first, ever. How is he not catching hell for that? Either of them could have maybe gotten the putout if they'd just done their little league best.
It's not exactly the Buckner play... they were down 3-1 in the series, and the center fielder and third baseman gave the Dodgers 2 extra outs in the inning. Plenty of blame to go around, the difference is Rizzo's contract isn't being discussed right now.

"We always joke about the ball in our area," Capobianco, 38, said at a local bar after the game. "We're not going to go out of our way to attack. If it's in our area, we're going to 'D' up."Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We're willing to do this. I know when I'm in the wrong and as soon as I did it, I was like, 'Boys I'm out of here,'" Capobianco told ESPN. "I patrol that wall and they know that."
JesseRogersESPN twitted:
Meet Austin Capobianco (middle), the fan that interfered with Mookie. I was talking to him at a local bar when a bunch of other fans asked him to take a pic with him and for his autograph. He was a beaut. Story up soon at ESPN: âIf itâs in our area, weâre going to âDâ up.â

Good to hear. That is the just outcome. Not only was it poor sportsmanship, Betts could have been hurt.
Twitter is full of posted clips of the incident. The main offender looks like a troll. Reminds me of Afraud Rodriguez's glove-slapping stunt in the '04 ALCS.
I don't know if anyone here has posted about @ArtButMakeItSports on X but it's consistently great:

A similar (not as physical) incident happened to Betts five or six years ago in Houston when he was with Boston - a fan hit his glove as he was trying to close it, and the ball popped out.
It is being reported that the two âfansâ who were ejected last night will be allowed back in for Game 5 tonight. That speaks for itself, doesnât it?
...Capobianco told (ESPN's Jesse) Rogers that the Yankees, who refunded him the cost of the tickets for Game 5, also informed him that he would be arrested if he tried to attend the game.<
I heard a really interesting story about the second-hand market for tickets now, and the series getting another game.
Iif you buy a ticket online through a resale site (Stubhub, etc.) and the game doesn't happen, you get your money back and the "tickets" return to the seller. There were seats for tonight's game that were going for $5k+. Some folks pay for their season tickets in NY by selling the playoffs. I had a friend who paid for the Rangers season by selling the playoffs. There were a LOT of people in NY that were praying for another game... to "finish" the sale of their tickets and recover the money they might have lost if the Yankees didn't force a game 5.
Crazy world.
I've known people who have done that - essentially paid for their season tickets by selling post-season tickets. Most people I know who bought season tickets bought them as a group of four or five, so they may not have resold all of the tickets - depending on the team or which stage of the series.

I hope the camera finds them and stays on them for an uncomfortably long time.

They must know the right people and/or have sufficient funds - they are from Connecticut after all.
