So was George Carlin, total Grumpy old man near the end. Not to put Maher in Carlin's class, that's one that's hard to ascend to.

Comedians are hyper-observant and smart.  Things are only funny because there is at least some truth to them.

If people are unaware of their own decision-making and lack the critical thinking required to evaluate options and understand how that affects both themselves and others, isn't that the definition of stupid?
stupid
stoo͞′pĭd, styoo͞′-

adjective

  1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
  2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
  3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless.
Implement mindfulness?  Isn't that the point of going to school?  If that doesn't exist in today's curriculum.... isn't the lack of attention, understanding, and awareness delivering less intelligent (dare I say stupid) people?

Perhaps part of the problem is getting your news from comedians? Is it easier to digest if its funny (if it doesn't hurt, it can't be funny)?
A restructuring of our school systems seems in order (and I'm not talking about new math...)
We are society where the $ rules, but few can even figure how to budget their cash flow.
Just read a story in Wall St Journal where 1 out of 3 who make over $250k are essentially living paycheck to paycheck.
People aren't as stupid as they are unconscious (of their decision making and what drives them).

True, but Ignorance as an "absence of knowledge" about something is something which can be amended or remedied - in theory.  Then there are concepts like "culturally-induced ignorance" which isn't so easy to deal with, especially if one exposed to such a concept wants to have their biases confirmed.
