I remember when our high school got a laser to play with, about 10 years after this. It cost more than a Volkswagen and was about the size of a shoebox. I didn't realize they were *that* new.

I just got to the wiki tab I opened on this. I've been in/around phone companies a lot, and this surprised me - partly because I recall having to involve an operator for long distance calls from Dallas in the 70s. Despite the NANP, you still needed a toll operator involved for a long time. AT&T/Bell Labs had procedures and policy for everything. They also had strong unions and operated in a weird regulatory space. So I'm not really surprised it took them 25+ years to fully roll out NANP.
