He was known as a master of 3-minute pop songs, but I always really liked this 6-minute+ B-side of "Everybody's Happy Nowadays". One of those songs that helped get me through high school.
â...'Without him itâs unlikely there would be the Ramones, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, New York Dolls, so many acts now so well established in the music firmament but 40 years ago just whispers,â the critic Roger Friedman wrote on the website Showbiz411. âCBGBâs and the Mudd Club were where you heard the music, but Bleecker Bobâs was where you held, felt it, saw it, listened to it, bought it.'â
Odd timing but I bought the self-released Buzzcocks EP "Spiral Scratch" in his store back in 1977, on his recommendation - two or three bucks for import singles or EPs back then. Outside of the NYC area he probably wasn't that widely known, but both linked articles are interesting. A lot of the "punk rock" icons from those days hung out in his store - especially if it was cold or raining.

"I am the world's oldest rebel," Smith told UNHCR Magazine in October. "I think there are many things we can do if we put our minds to it, and we shouldn't be leaving anyone out."
I learned recently that the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that I was treated for in 2009 has returned. My team of doctors has begun treatment of the disease and I plan on fighting this aggressively.
A lot has happened in medicine since I overcame this disease in 2009. My doctors are optimistic that I will see good results from the latest therapies, as am I.
I will continue to stay involved with Vulcan, the Allen Institutes, the Seahawks and Trail Blazers, as I have in the past. I have confidence in the leadership teams to manage their ongoing operations during my treatment.
I am very grateful for the support I’ve received from my family and friends. And I’ve appreciated the support of everyone on the teams and in the broader community in the past, and count on that support now as I fight this challenge.
He gave away billions and is still giving. MoPOP (Experience Music Project), KEXP are both things that resonated with my family. Plus a ton of more important things too.

He had cancer previously (a couple of bouts, I believe). They recently announced that he had another resurgence, and it was serious. He is a major player here, and it will be interesting to see how things shake out. He has certainly left his mark on the town. For the better I would say. I hope his legacy continues through Vulcan. Looks like his sister will likely take over a lot of stuff - I only have limited 2nd hand knowledge, but she's not as well liked as he was.
