Maybe broken hearts are better receptors, or my fatigue draws the curtains open to that light, but how else can the perfection of tall white oak begin with nothing more than what fell, heedless, and gathered by squirrels, stashed, forgotten, put down roots in the cold earth and reach toward what it does not know? I ask you this: how? I am so tired in what should be my time of rest, and still I know that spring is out there, that roots will plunge, fawns will emerge, and step into the light with gratitude for all that is made, and for whatever mysteries await. bhd 1/9/04

Oh, and I forgot to mention that an owl graced us with its presence at our ceremony, and a family of 5 deer. EDIT: LOVELY poem, BHD. Thank you! that's the plan...i saved the rest of the soup, and will make the scones for him...a visit from owl....and deer.....5 is a significant number, too....very cool....

"on solstice night the winter comes stalking through the antlered trees, riding on the frozen wind. with hoof and horn this longest night brings round the ancient, endless joust— light and dark contest for power, and light, this night, shall triumph...."
