Latest piece from Timothy Snyder:
Application for Cabinet, Ambassadorial, Staff, and Hacker (CASH) Positions.
Part 1.
Please answer the following questions truthfully with a yes or a no.
1. I have been paid by an entity close to the Russian government or by a Russian company.
2. I have been paid by an entity close to the Chinese government or by a Chinese company.
3. I have been convicted of a crime in the United States.
4. I have been credibly accused of sexual violence.
5. I have authored or shared racist or Nazi material on social media.
6. I have hacked and leaked sensitive data to which I have no legal right.
7. I took part in or supported an attempt to overthrow the constititional order.
8. I regularly praise a South African oligarch.
9. I have acted to ensure that billionaires should hold power and pay no taxes.
10. I propose the use of national police or armed forces against Americans.
Please award yourself ten points for each affirmative (yes) answer.
If you scored zero, please consider subjecting yourself to social media abuse on the appropriate regime platform for your naive belief in law, your laughable concern for justice, and your outdated love of country. You need not complete part 2.
If you scored fifty or above, please begin at once to behave as if you already held high-level federal employment. Report unannounced to the department of your choice. Musk-Trump will support you as necessary, and usher you through the confirmation process as appropriate. You need not complete part 2.
If your score was between 10 and 40, inclusive, please continue to part 2 of the application.
Part 2.
Essay.
Please explain, in fifty words or less, how you could personally contribute to an ongoing messaging campaign that presents the president, rather than a South African oligarch, as holding power. Answers that are copied from others or written by AI will be favorably considered. Do not, however, plagiarize from the current approach, which is the daily generation of international crisis by the president.
Nota bene. You are forbidden from distributing this official regime document. High scores are of course celebrated within Musk-Trump, and will one day figure on plaques on former government buildings that have been sold or given to foreign powers. The publication of this form at present might, however, encourage journalists or the general public to calculate the scores of CASH appointees. For the time being, unofficial rankings of CASH appointees by citizens or by the Enemy of the People Failing Fake News Press are undesirable.

Saw a casual friend last night at a bar...they are retired but his wife runs a local charity, giving out meals and free preschool for those who need it.
The wife was informed a few days ago that all federal funding was cut. No warning, no grace period....they were forced to layoff two staff.
Maybe, there is an argument the fed shouldnt be involved in funding local charities...but how do you just pull the plug without warning?
And then you mix that with the republican agenda to increase school vouchers, because "all" kids should have a right to go to a private school, right?
Well, do those vouchers provide enough for "all" families to go to those select private schools? No.
So in effect, the kids from families who cannot afford it stay in the public schools, and the rich kids, most of whom already go to private schools, have their tuition subsidized by taxpayers.
Republican commentators, including the smug Matthew Continetti, have claimed that Biden was just as interventionist and disruptive with his attempt to cancel $400 billion in student loan debt and his advocacy of the Covid vaccine. Continetti, a commentator last night on NPR evening news, had nothing to say about the likely illegality of Musk's power and actions.
Unfortunately, neither the other commentator (Jonathan Capeheart) or the NPR moderator pointed out the wholesale, wrecking-ball destruction of Musk's actions. Musk is carrying out Trump's vow of vengeance. This is not reform or planned-out dismantlement. Musk has hired kids in their 20s to carry out his actions.
As for the school vouchers: I see two possible goals for Republicans:
1. Private K-12 education to create profit centers for Republican entrepreneurs.
2. Act as a way to boost religion in education by promoting faith-based ("Christian") schools.
As for the people your friends are helping with their local charity—the GOP has screwed them over. Unfortunately, economically marginalized people vote against their best interests and swallow the GOP Kool Aid. So they don't organize and agitate for more help from their governments.

Make the stupid more stupider, and get them to help pay for your kids education at a private institution, all while telling them it's about CRT, boys in the girls bathroom, and your ability to have a say in your child's education (given you've done so well for yourself).
You literally can't make this shit up.

To me, private charities indicate a failure of the state to do its job.
All public money for public schools should go to public schools; not private school grifts.

This was the agenda. This is not surprising. This is what conservatives voted for. Nothing that is happening is a surprise (well maybe the speed and scope), this was all telegraphed well in advance. You've been a big critic of the Democrats, but they were the alternative to this.

Actually, that's one of my techniques, although in the story I read as a kid it was a white bear. So telling myself not to think of a white bear makes me think of a white bear, which means I stop thinking about the thing I want to stop thinking about.
Sort of works

Just a thought:
Stickiness of the mind is the term we use for a biologically based trait that is experienced as repetitive looping thinking, a sense of getting mired in worry, a talent for imaginative flights into catastrophic images and thoughts, and a tendency for junk channels of the mind to get loud and insistent instead of simply flowing by. It is highly heritable, so it tends to run in families, and it is sensitive to stress such as fatigue, illness, or chronic conflict. It also increases with positive stress like excitement. Stickiness is not a sign of mental illness: it is a characteristic that, once understood, can be incorporated into a full and meaningful life.
One very interesting facet of sticky thoughts is that they do not respond to direct efforts to get rid of them. In fact, resisting these thoughts by arguing with them, distracting from them, trying to substitute other thoughts, seeking reassurance about them, recoiling in horror, or admonishing oneself simply results in their return or the intrusion of even more distressing thoughts.
Obsessive ruminating is very hard to stop. Like saying, "Don't think of Pink Elephants."
Had no idea it is likely inherited.
