Interesting story of a film about a Italian Nationalist leader before Mussolini (if there is a creepy nationalist scum bag involved Rump and Musk will enjoy it) :
"Igor BezinoviÄ explains how he and other locals crafted a hybrid doc about the nationalist occupation of Rijeka by Italian poet and army officer Gabriele DâAnnunzio, and what Trump and Musk have to do with it." https://www.hollywoodreporter....
How long do you expect them to work and go unpaid ?
Just to be clear...they aren't going unpaid. Their pay is deferred. They will get it all back when the government reopens. If they can't live a few months without savings... well that's their fault, isn't it? Budget better... stop spending all of your money.
I spent 10 hours yesterday with a Trump appointed judge... who mentioned at least twice (that I heard) that he wasn't getting paid. That second home last year really makes you appreciate cash flow...don't it.
Also... all of the people not showing up for work right now will also get paid for the time they didn't work. Trump is saying that maybe they shouldn't get back pay...or maybe only some deserve it and should be treated differently, but the law says they all get it.
The President who signed the law... Donald J. Trump, January 16, 2019.
If Trump cared at all about the shutdown, he'd sit down with them to negotiate instead of canceling the one meeting that was scheduled 6 weeks ago.
I do not think that doing away with the filibuster is a good idea either, because it is that "guard rail" you mentioned. The employees should not go unpaid of course, but to assert that this is entirely the fault of the Democrats is inaccurate.
I agree generally. But here's a counter point: The filibuster was one of many pieces implemented to prevent 'tyranny of the majority', to reserve some power of the underrepresented. The Senate is another. But over the last century, the house has also become a tool of minority rule. Add in gerrymandering, voter apathy and other political maneuvering and you have a situation where well under 30% of the population is wielding control. Add in the fact that the the republicans generally aren't recognizing any norms that put restraints on them, while demanding recognition of restraints on the democrats (see supreme court appointees), and you have a rigged game. Breaking the filibuster would be bad. But continuing to play a game with a set of rules that only apply to one group is a fool's errand. Not saying it's time to get rid of the filibuster, but I am saying it's time to re-evaluate if this game is worth playing under these circumstances.

The two longest federal government shutdowns in US history occurred when Trump was President.
Given that fact, I find it impossible to accept a narrative that he has no responsibility for the current one.
...
So the question is ... do you or anyone else here want to see the filibuster done away with knowing what the long term effect will be ? Me, I think that it would be a bad idea but I'm starting to think we may have to do it.
SNAP not withstanding, how long do you or anyone else here want to see federal workers such as TSA, air traffic controllers, FBI, the military, et al go unpaid while working ? How long do you expect them to work and go unpaid ?

And Trump had already complied with the lower court order releasing funds. Some 10 states had already made SNAP payments based upon Trump's action which Jackson's order stopped and reversed.
The other part of this mess is the misnomer that repubs control the Senate. While they do have the majority, passage of most bills including appropriations require 60 votes. That means, assuming every repub votes together, unless 7 democrats vote to pass a bill it does not pass. This is what makes this shutdown a democrat owned property.
.
Trump is urging the Senate to do away with the filibuster so that a simple majority is all that is needed to pass a bill. This is the primary difference between the House and the Senate.
To do away with the filibuster and make both houses a simple majority voting to pass bills takes away a major guard rail against mob rule.

For a guy who doesn't do facebook or any news sources, your unfacts sure line up pretty directly with maga nonsense of the day.
No. Trump complied. Your Biden appointed SCOTUS justice has put the latest block on handing out SNAP funds. You democrats truly own this shutdown.
Trump did not comply, his administration appealed the lower court order. The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court to pause a lower court order requiring the government to distribute $4 billion in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Justice Department lawyers requested a temporary reprieve by 9:30 p.m., arguing the emergency stay is needed while the administration pursues its appeal. Judge Jackson wrote the order; it doesn't mean that she alone made the decision. The decision was likely made by all of the members of the (conservative-majority) SCOTUS.

In writing a temporary order she kept his cronies from doing something permanent.

We just need a group of reasonable people to push forward the 25th amendment - after making Vance even more of a laughing stock. The key is to force the mantle on him quickly so as to minimize the amount of time he has to prepare (although itâs certain he already is, and there is a non-zero chance that he GOP has sleepyFelon in line for a public assassination to make him a martyr/saint).
