As i walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time i feel like this inside,
There's one thing i wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as i walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'cause each time i feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

Definitely needed this today.
A fine example of a cover becoming THE SONG.
I could hear this song every day for the rest of my life and never grow tired of it.

Midnight Oil does a pretty good wall of sound version of this in their shows.

Shame this choon was written by Nick Lowe, but I agree they are both banging songs.

Good timing, William! I'm going to see Elvis in concert tomorrow night.
Got to see Nick and Elvis sing this yesterday in Vancouver - pretty darned fun

Might be nice to hear the acoustic Nick Lowe version on here one of these days. I think i might actually like it a bit better than Elvis's take on it, even though i was/am an Elvis fan  I don't have time right now to go looking for a YouTube link though. Soz.

IAgree
I enjoyed this song more when Bill Murray sang it at Karaoke😆
A great song that almost went to obscurity. From Wikipedia:

Elvis Costello and the Attractions recorded a cover of the song for the B-side of Nick Lowe's 1978 single "American Squirm", a version credited to "Nick Lowe and His Sound". At the time Lowe was Costello's producer, and produced this track as well. Lowe recalled of the process:

It was [Costello's] idea. I produced his records back then. ... He was a fan of a band I was in before Rockpile, called Brinsley Schwarz. He used to come see us play. 'Peace Love and Understanding' was a Brinsley Schwarz song. ... But it was he who really popularized that song. It's been covered by loads of people, and it would've disappeared if it wasn't for him.[5]

 macadavy wrote:

The original is what I call a 'parking lot song'. First time I heard Nick Lowe's plaintive version, I sat in the car until it was over.

What a scandal! I have bought this album the first day he went out in 1979, i have bought again a second time in 1998 because the first was to much used. Why i have not this fantastic song on my record? Why, Why, Why? Must i buy another one?
Yes.

Which makes some of what you wrote ... kind of ironic?

I can see that, although I'm not personally bothered by his voice, but I know many are. I think there are other vocals worse (to my ears) like Young, Dylan, Pearl Jam, RHCP, Dave Matthews, to name the worst offenders. But, like some of those, I think Costello's composing skills are superior. (Of course, this song is written by Nick Lowe, who also produced the LP.) Anyway, this whole album is excellent (hard to believe it's 40 years back!)  but this song just f_____ ROCKS!

I know what you mean about the grating voice. There are a handful of those that show up here on RP.  Maybe it would help if you listened to and took to heart the lyrics. This is a great, one of the great, songs about raising the consciousness. Plus, it just ROCKS!

Now that you bring up that name, I vaguely remember a song called "Mirror Star" by them.  I think a friend of mine had the album back then.

One of those bands that got a lot of press, represented the Youth of Today, etc etc. but didn't get any airplay in the flyover states. I wasn't curious enough to special order the album and by the time I did hear it, years later, was pretty meh.

Happens to a lot of singers - their voices get deeper and weaker as they get older due to any number of reasons - how they've treated them, whether they smoke or not, what sort of training they do, etc, etc.

Not just male singers either - Joni Mitchell, for example?

He was 25 when he recorded this.

This song was recorded early in his career, so his voice hadn't changed much at this point. I actually haven't noticed much of a change in his voice over the years.

Talent is missing big time here, is that a singer?

What's missing is in the receptors.
hear! hear!
"hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!"

Not long ago Stephen Stills said that it's sad that his song "For What It's Worth" can still be sung with a straight face and that it should be a parody by now.
I'll add Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On", The Youngboolds "Let's Get Together" and this song
AFTER 37 YEARS...never fails to WAKE ME UP!
If only I could find this tune on karaoke. I would kill it.

Great Set, very topical: Youngbloods, followed up by Elvis Costello.  You don't editorialize, Bill, but your selections do betray a commonality of feeling with this listener at least.   {#Clap}
Loving the segues this morning.......creative!
I love it when Bill Murray does a karaoke version of this song on 'Lost in Translation'.

Great song, great Elvis Costello, great album

This fantastic Costello single (which I knew was a cover of a Nick Lowe song, but hadn't heard the Brinsley original until about 2009!) should have been HUGE in the U.S., but wasn't.

Thank you again crap radio programmers...

rp overplayed.  i'd really like to see more variety of cuts to go along with the eclecticism.  big variety of genres. variety within an artist's body of work, not so much.

besides i really get tired of elvis costello's nose singing.
Nick Lowe !!
People either love Costello or they can't cope with it.  So it goes.
If he were just a touch more commercial or could sing..........it's basically good rock N roll.
