If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you
If I knew the way I would take you home

Ya know...they just don't write songs like this anymore.

My best friend of 40 years died last year from lung cancer.  He was always a big GD fan and I know he loved this song.  I asked his wife if we could play this song at his memorial service and she readily agreed.  He was one who made ripples in still water throughout his life.  Love you, warren T, miss you ever single day!
One of the great singalong songs. Even non-Dead fans like one.
this is one of my desert island songs. Always gives me smiles and shivers. Understated joy.

Music is usually very subjective.  Like I said, I'm no Dead fan -- overrrated -- but these and a number of other tracks are first rate.  And stop calling me a cynic. Used for the final song of our Co. president's untimely funeral. RIP Bob, I miss our conversations of all things musical. Enjoy your rest and I hope you and Jerry can jam together.

I really only like the Dead when Garcia is singing.  That other guy really annoys me.  Can't have everything.

My all time favorite Dead song. I get acid chills every time I hear it.

I always felt that way until I went to live shows of the dead.  No other experience like it.

I clocked that as well... First performance 1 March 1968, this album dated 1970, so contemporaries. I sang it at school. Jerry would have been unlikely to hear it I would have thought. The similarity is mentioned in the Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Any_Dream_Will_Do_(song)

I also like the GD although I'm not (or wasn't) a Dead Head....oh I wish I could have toured with the band back in the day....totally different life, eh?

As far as telling folks to "open up (their) small minds" well....that might not be the most persuasive argument style.  And really, with an average rating of just under 8 with 2,000 ratings....this might be the highest rated GD tune.  Besides, other than explaining why something is "10-Godlike vs 01-Sucko-Barfo" and maybe pointing out a few things about how the track was made, etc., I really don't think any of us can influence someone's taste/rating much more than a point.

This one's a 9-Outstanding to me.  LONG LIVE RP and PEACE OUT

Breath deep long enough and they do.
Was never a Deadhead.  Didn't dislike them.  Liked Uncle John's Farm and a few others, but just did not get the fascination at all  Then I heard this song used in the last episode of Freaks and Geeks of all places, and I was intrigued.  Bought American Beauty.  Wow!  Bought the album before and after it, heard a few concerts people had recorded.  Kind of get it now.

Hell, on a sunny afternoon, after a few beers, this is just such an awesome song. Best way to enjoy it! Pour yourself one, sit in the sun and just unwind. It's the best therapy in the universe.
American Schlager, some might say.

Nice sensations. Nice memories. Nice mix-up with nice short-time fizzlers. Crappy juice; like Mike's Lemonade.

Wow. This song is perfection. Gives me chills every time. You know when the stars are aligned, and the music and lyrics come together beyond gracefully... that's bliss.

Every time I hear this, I think of two dear friends who have left this earth. Rest in peace, John "Ernie" Beer and Earl "Willy" Doyle - you are both deeply missed.

^ Wow... I knew I had commented on this song at some point in the past, but didn't realize it was nearly TEN years ago. I still feel the same about it, and I still think of these friends every time I hear it.

RP has been a part of my life since 2002. FOURTEEN years. Thank you, Bill & Rebecca!

Most bands today just scratch their heads in wonderment and just don't get it.

The term "over-rated" is over-rated.

Nah, according to clearly more knowledgable commenters here, this is trite, non melodious, boring, and otherwise "overrated", the favorite dissing term here. I will never understand the I-hate-the-Dead crowd who proudly proclaim to (apparently) everyone they meet how much they despise this band. Oddly, the things they decry as obviously earning their disdain are generally acknowledged by fans as well, just not the focus of their attention. And all it can take is one song such as this to shift perspective.
The Grateful Dead are Ubiquitous
hey hoofoos,

Too bad you feel that way. May be you just don't get it. And you won't be able to see them live.

But keep plugging away at finding music that makes you feel happy. A few billion people feel that way about the GD.
