Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain came pouring down
Me and Billy standing there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of the fishing rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there getting wet
With our backs against the fence
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it don't rain all day
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like going home
And it stoned me
And the rain let up, and the sun came up
While we were getting dry
Almost let a pickup truck
Nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in, and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
And we looked at the swim, and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like going home
And it stoned me
On the way back home, we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eye
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles, too, one for me and you
And he said: Hey, there you are
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like going home
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul

Always wondered what "stoned me like Jelly Roll" was. Back in my stoner days, that part would send me to the store to get Jelly Rolls. LOL

Why is every 5th song in the mellow mix, a Van Morrison song?
This always take me back to riding in my late husband's 56 Chevy wagon on the far north coast of California. So bittersweet. He went home.
Awesome, more of "The Man" please :-)

In typical Van Morrison fashion "Jelly Roll" is either a reference to Jelly Roll Morton (many of Van's songs have references to blues/rock'n'roll/jazz musicians) or the meaning of female genitalia or plain sex. Take your pick. Now, where did Jelly Roll Morton get his nickname from ? ;-)

I have always thought of the reference as being Jelly Roll Morton, the jazz artist.
I don't know whether that means Jelly Roll got stoned a lot, or more likely, that Van gets feeling 'stoned' when he listens to Jelly Roll.

My good friend Colin loved this song. May he rest easy, in peace. I dedicate today’s fat Alberta Brown Trout to your most excellent memory.

Since he was also a pimp, yes it did.

4 Sweet photos of F-18s in the mix....and some great music to enjoy, too!
A great album!
Tampa Red struts his jelly with who he likes...
Wondering if this is a remaster/remix. I don't remember there being as much reverb on his vocals.
Great song, regardless.

My man Van Man is a beast
This song gets deep into my head, and I kind of wonder exactly why.
Van was 25 when he recorded this and only 23 when he recorded Astral Weeks...Genius!
35 years of listening to Van!💚💜

I must have listened to this song 10,000 times in my life. And I still scramble to turn up the volume every damn time!
Take a load off, Vannie, take a load for free.
ahhhh yissss
If I could have anyone's voice it would be Van's.

The one live concert I saw him play he was completely disconnected from the audience and delivered an emotionless performance. At one point he asked the audience for a song request, at which point there was an unintelligible response from several in the audience. Almost immediately he heard (or maybe pretended to hear) the title of the song he wanted to sing next and launched into it without delay as if he had a bus to catch after the show and didn't want to any waste time.
Probably about as good as he ever got - and man, that was pretty damn good!
Van the Man!

I think Van Morrison is one of those artists that you had to have been into way back when, 'cause I'm 50 and I just don't "get" why RP plays so much Van Morrison (or CCR, for that matter). His voice annoys the hell out of me and the music just hasn't aged very well.
This is one of those great songs that I care to never hear again.

And this one at my wake! Drink up boys, life was good! I cannot bring myself to rate this song, because I probably can't be objective. I used to love Van Morrison, and I suppose I still do, but several songs off this album are just played to death. Years ago, it would have been a "10" for sure. Between RP and my local alterna-station (hey, I haven't figured out how to stream RP in my car yet), I hear something off of this album two or more times a day.
That's just too often for me.

It always interests me to see how another artists' interpretation can change my perception of a song I thought was already worked over. The Jerry Garcia Band used to play this in concert, in a much more languorous manner (Garcia did like to slow things down, way down, sometimes). But, this allowed the words to come through in a way I had never experienced. It really deepened my appreciation of the song.

Van Morrison. So under rated and under appreciated. His work is very good. I've always liked everything he has done. This album in particular is awesome. "Into the Mystic" will be played at my funeral. 10
Not a huge VM fan, but this is pretty great.

Me too...
I used to think this was Outstanding, but who am I kidding? It's Godlike.
What up folks... Just registered to comment on this.
I too wondered for years about the Jelly Roll reference in
"And It Stoned Me"... Just to get the answer right for yez...
It is a Reference to Jelly Roll Morton... The FIRST True composer of Jazz Music, especially on piano. When heard for the first time... It is said to have "Stoned" people. LOL
As you'll notice in the lyrics... It stoned me just like Jelly Roll, the reference is capitolized... Thus the name!
Peace Y'all
Amazing how some songs cannot be identified with an era. This song fits in any decade.
Van is the Man
Just saw Van in Phoenix in September of 06'. He's still got it! A classic performer that will remain through time.

"Jelly roll" is old blues slang for the female genitalia.
I guess that only half answers the question: maybe it's obvious, but "stoned" here means "impressed favorably." :-)

Jelly Roll Morton was an American pianist and band leader.
