Like ghosts on open windows
The curtains rise and fall
The past is a foreign country
At the dark end of the hall

And the morning is an offering
To the shelter of the day
But the violent come
And they bury it away

Time goes by at the speed of life
Slower than a slow dance on a hot summer night
Faster than the skin breaks on the edge of a knife
And we just go on at the speed of life

Like questions begging answers
The stars appear at night
What's it mean to love somebody
What's it mean to be alive

I heard a little girl laughing
At her first sight of snow
Saw an old man dying
In a room, he didn't know

While the world turns through the ages
It's a most peculiar ride
Holding on to one another
Moving at the speed of life

We just go on at the speed of life
A family on the midway in the carnival lights
Moving in a circle through the sounds and the sights
And it all goes by at the speed of life

Time goes by at the speed of life
Slower than a slow dance on a hot summer night
Faster than the skin breaks, baby
On the edge of a knife

And we just go on and on at the speed of life
Moving at the speed of life, speed of life
On and on and on and on
On and on and on and on

Ahhh...

He's from Moline, IL.  That's a rough town.

That album cover may be of  downtown Moline.
Everything about this beautiful bittersweet song tugs at the heart and often brings tears to my eyes. Any song that can do that is a ten in my book.
This is an excellent song, full of powerful, apropos sentiment, it occurs to me whenever I hear it -- and I love hearing it here on RP.
Never heard of this guy in my life.  Really nice surprise, just 25 years late.
Huh. How did I miss this?
Sounds so much like Sting at his best. Most excellent.

Come on, man, if you had learned enough Art History to know the word "Neoclassicist", then you should also know who Edward Hopper was - by the way, he was not a neoclassicist in any way.
Go see Hopper's Night Hawk painting.

Exactly.  What's different about this and the million other poppy things I don't know.  But this is a winner, alright.  I luvs it loads.
I played this song several times back in February when my mother passed of Alzheimer's and used that line "time goes by at the speed of life" for my Facebook status that day for a while. Also last week when I had my "first" heart attack, this song came to mind and I played it loudly when I got home.
Hi Bill,

Listen to this;

I can send you his MP3 with his consent if you like.

Exactly.  I thought, is this a faster version of a Sting song.
If you groom a go, gives back a ghost, and some room to admit that I was thinking about how to lie.
Excellent artist, great writer.  His first album is amazing,, View from 3rd Street, tells a story of struggle and triumph. More please!

I've always thought that Jude Cole deserved more fame and credit than other singer songwriters of the adult contemporary genre.
My love for this song nearly rises to my love for Hopper, and my love for Hopper knows no bounds.
Catchy tune - I've always liked it.. esp. like the lyric "Faster than the skin breaks on the edge of a knife"
Everything about this is Ho Hum except the chorus
My toes is tapping...  I like it.  :)
I like the soundscape of this song…

The first mates name was Hopper. . .

. . My god he had a whopper, once round the deck, one round his neck and up his a*** for a stopper. (from an old english tune often sung at Twickenham and on deck of the good ship Venus)
Can't find this on iTunes. The CD is on Amazon - year is 1995.

I came here to comment on the song and got distracted by the Hopperania...IMHO "Speed of Life" is a nearly  perfect pop song. I found the balance of the disc, hmm, so-so, but this one's outstanding.

Beautiful and introspective. This premise of 'Speed of Life' often bestows upon my ever wondering and sometimes failing brain. This song is so damn good! Rest in peace, Elaine...we are gonna miss you.

AVF3S is a terrific album. Thought he was a one album wonder until I caught more at RP!
Wow this really really sounds like Sting, possibly "I'm So Happy I can't stop Crying" from Mercury Falling. I guess both songs are pretty derivative.
This does not mean I don't like it of course. Good tune, good lyrics..

Edit: Thank you Proclivities, that Album cover was making my brain itch.
Love, love, love this tune. Did I mention that I like this song too?

It's funny when you hit the "buy CD from Amazon.com" link and Amazon reminds you that you bought it April 25, 2007.

edit 12.15.11 I just tried to buy it again.

An overlooked and shiny gem.
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!  Thanks Radio Paradise!!!
Speed of Life, Speed of Sound!? Not bad, btw.
Really like this song. The guitar hook juxtaposed with the bass is sooo moreish..

Amen!  Hope this guy doesn't give up music in favor of act'ing (said with my best Jon Lovitz impression).

So, if I use my iPhone to relay RP to the Bluetooth-equipped Kenwood head unit in my car, I can hear RP while I'm driving around? How COOL is that?!

I really liked that one.

Well, it sort of does. The phrase is an idiom with a particular meaning. I understand that you can use that phrase and actually mean asking for a question, so it's not a "misuse," but then I agree with the website that "raises the question" is probably a better way to say that. Where I totally agree with you is that it's amazing that someone devoted a whole website to the issue. As Bill Shatner said to the Trekkies, "get a life!"

That is, one can beg for an answer without begging the question. I too like the song quite well. Skål!
I agree with the pet peeve, it annoys me hugely. But Inamorato is correct imho, a question begging an answer doesn't imply a misuse of "begging the question." Holy mackerel though, I would never have imagined that an entire web site would be devoted to drawing a line in the sand on the misuse of "begging the question." I loved the end of the home page where he/she states "this is why we fight." It begs the question of whether a web site can change the momentum of this misuse, however.
