Jimi Hendrix played the same way!
To clarify. Dick Dale was left handed & played a left handed bodied stratocaster. He then strung it upside down to be correct for a right handed player.

They were doing opposite to eachother. Confused? Welcome to my world!
Truly Epic piece of music! If you don't respond to this, then I'm afraid your DOA!!
Funny how nicknames or monikers come and go... Dick is one that I don't hear any young people calling themselves these days.
I suppose using the work Dickhead as a form of ridicule or contempt put an end to that.
Tricky Dick put it all to rest.
Give me your six, I got the 9!
LOL!!! I gave it a TEN!!!
Jimi Hendrix played the same way!
No, Jimmy Hendrix played a right handed Stratocaster flipped around but the strings were re-strung. I read that Jimmy also knew how to play right-handed as demanded by his father. Albert King however played like Dick Dale on a right handed guitar strung upside-down. I imagine this to be very hard to learn since everything has to be done in reverse and self-taught.
Much as I hate to be pedantic, that's not quite right. Hendrix played mostly right-handed guitars, but strung for left handed playing. So he'd take a regular guitar, turn it over, and string it so that the low E string was at the top for him.
Dick Dale's way is very odd indeed!
Correct, Hendrix thought the left handed bodies were sub-par, but hadn't really played one. Clapton has a Laft handed body he bought to give him to prove they were fine, and the night Hendrix died he told him he needed to get with him for a gift he had for him.

I saw him live in Adelaide in the 90's. Ears are still ringing.

My eldest is a lefty and wanted a left handed guitar when he was in his early teens. I insisted that he learn right handed as there are hundreds, thousands probably, of rh guitars in many households just sitting around. Now the @#$# can outplay me any day and also plays fiddle and piano. Never seen a lefty piano!
Dick plays left hand. He also plays with the strings reversed for a leftie.(the strings are correct for a right hander playing his guitar). This is a seriously weird way to play. I know because I play the same way & never fail to get weird looks & comments at gigs. It also contributes to his unique sound. The upstroke hits the fat E string first. & his style favours the lower strings. I want dibs on any old guitars he wants rid of!

80 years old this year.
Like Mr. Hendrix was, Mr. Dale is a lefty.

Check out the Ramrods, country /cowboy version from '61.
Surf music + blues = psychedelic = groups like Cream and on and on ...
Now, Ortega1, you know better than that. You were born in 1966.
excellent recording
that's what SHE said
He's also playing Dec. 8th in Oakland at the Uptown.
He's 78 years old, broke and falling apart, as is his wife, and he's playing for money to pay medical expenses.

I've caught him live 3 times over the past 4 years down here in Florida. Sad to hear that he is touring so much to pay medical bills, but I am lucky I get to see him live so often. And don't think he has slowed down because of his illness; his shows are hard rocking and he delivers. Amazing man.
He toured up here in Chicago in early October. What he lacked in performance on the guitar due to his ailing health, he made up for in storytelling that was well worth the price of admission. Its not from a youth of debauchery, merely Father time. Support him while we still can.
Agree.... 11/23/16 :)
Not short enough.
The 1948 original by Stan Jones & The Death Valley Rangers? Burl Ives did a good version too.
wowo, i did not know that. i'm listening to it now on youtube
thanks!
Dick Dale on steroids!!!

And The Outlaws.
Dick Dale helped Leo Fender develop the first reverb in amplifiers to capture a sound he imagined in his head but there was no equipment to reproduce at the time. He's a pioneer. You can simply turn that knob on your Mesa Boogie because Dick Dale came up with the idea back when your parents were probably still in grade school.
cool piece of background information!

And how does one "reverb properly"? Turn that knob up on your Fender/Mesa Boogie/Marshall?
Yeah, that's tough to do.

Yeah, that's tough to do.
He uses a reverb tank, not the amp reverb. Heavy strings, a loud clean sound, and percussive style probably help to enhance the feel of reverb too.
Youbetcha! Good call.
Icons of the time: a beach with a nice curl for a wave, Dick Dale, and a '57 Chevy with fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror.
He's fun... and for a time was The King...

I was so confused by the lighting in that photo that I nearly missed him being left handed.
The scale is a bit sublime also.
