Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
Everything is made from dreams
Time is made from honey slow and sweet
Only the fools know what it means
Temptation, temptation, temptation
Oh, temptation, temptation, I can't resist
Well I know that she is made of smoke
But I've lost my way
He knows that I am broke
But I must play
Temptation, oh temptation, temptation, I can't resist
Dutch pink and Italian blue
He is there waiting for you
My will has disappeared
Now confusion is so clear
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can't resist
Temptation, temptation, temptation
I can't resist

In fact, Holly did an entire album of TW covers, titled Temptation.

I came on here to suggest just that...but you already summed it up better than I could have :)
Oh, Tom Waits...
I have been to  several of her concerts  plus a DVD at Hollywood  bowl.  Always  fantastic, she's in my lifetime  top 3.
Her keyboards on that background...
Well, I give up - trying to do housework all morning
and just waiting for any song I don't like so I can put this perfect station on pause. Not going to happen, I know that. Oh, too bad, rest time now with Diana.

I vote 9 for this one.

Also, RP is NOT my go to for staying awake driving tunes. Not why I listen, not that Bill doesn't play some.

Said it before and will petition one more time - wish we could have the Holly Cole version on RP. Much more powerful and moving IMHO. This sounds too contrived to me.

Yes, Tony  is not. I would go with the misogyny thing, but why did Ms. Krall drop her cover of "For No One"  from Quiet Nights - sang from a woman's point of view? Can't find it anywhere now.
Very talented, but not my scene - I'm off to the Rock Mix.

Cat on the keyboard I guess...
Such fantastic production... Love it
What a sequence:
You Should See Me in a Crown, Billie Eilish
Hey Lion, Sofi Tucker
Temptation, Diana Krall
And it WORKS., the sum is greater than the whole....

My 15 year old daughter told me to turn my music down while playing Eilish. I told her she should try listening to some of this  new music. She said "I already own that song, Dad".....

Not even in the ball park of Holly Cole. Can't really hear this b/c it makes me want to hear the much more passionate version.

I like her. But I don't like her too much. I think she's overrated. IMHO. Not a lot of there there. Like most of her tracks, it's a solid - 6. On some days, even a fabulous middle of the road 5.  That is, I may listen to the tracks on RP, but I don't leap to download her tunes.

Gotta love the sultry sound of her voice...

Doesn't touch Holly Cole's version, which IMHO is amazing.
Good version of this song. An her enunciation enables me to understand all the lyrics, for which Waits has me guessing on a few words.
Elvis did good.

So, you're rejecting the Tom Waits original because he's a man? (Just teasing you, Fred.) {#Roflol}

Gotta say - Diana Krall has a scary way of seducing men and women with her voice - I've heard the original, but this rendition just makes me weak in the knees.  And by the way - temptation will be a mainstay in life - it'll always be there, so you CAN resist it, knowing it'll manifest itself again and again. Choose your temptation.  I'm pretty sure there's a wise saying in there somewhere, but I'm tired, so I'll leave it to someone else to extrapolate.

She (her bassist actually) added a great deal to the first few seconds of the song, as far as I'm concerned.  After that, I'll take Tom's version.

A few years ago my date and I found ourselves alone with Mr and Mrs C in the back section of a good Vancouver restaurant, and seated close enough that I could have tapped Elvis on the shoulder with my bread knife. We could hear every word of their conversation (kids, what he did in the studio that day etc) and it took a real effort for us to not sit there silently eavesdropping and at the same time carry on our own conversation realizing that they could hear us, too.  My date had on a pair of vintage patent leather black and white flame Doc Martin oxfords that E gave a few sidelong glances, but it never turned into a conversation opener.

Now I can say I had dinner with Elvis and Diana...and that they like their Bloody Caesars extra spicy.

What a band! Yikes.

Good to hear DK on RP  {#Hearteyes}
Diana Krall is an incredible talent.  Simply amazing both as a pianist and a vocalist.  IMHO this isn't the best selection to judge her by if this is your first exposure to her music.  As a previous post suggested her music seems to be moving towards targeting commercial results now instead of the pure joy seeing where it takes you.  A pity.

illuminating comment, stkman. because of what you said i especially listened out for the piano, but it was so far in the back i felt this must only be doing her a dis-service.

I like this version well enough and she is definitely better eye candy than Tom Waits but no one can wrench this tune out this like ol' Tom...  {#Sunny}

LOL she is way too sexy looking for Elvis but thats not the point, she has become a damn good vocal stylist but her strong suit has allways been she is a amazing jazz piano player, been listening to her for years, do think the recording industry has pushed her into more commercial stuff

I think Tom Waits is one of the greatest songwriters alive... and this is in fact a great version of this song!
I will rare it a nine

Great song.  Holly Cole nails this one cold.  Diana lays back too much to be involving for me.  Still worth listening to but the vocal lacks excitement.  Just doesn't sound very tempted.

I think she was raised on old jazz standards, her father's records.
This one is tough, it's ok but the original by Tom Waits is amazing! I wouldn't say this cover does it much justice.

Racism? Not so fast. First, even racists are entitled to their opinions. I frankly think your censorship is more repugnant than the "racism" that you are imputing to Victoryluna. Second, Victory did note that it was a stereotype (an "old line") that white women ain't got no soul. If you disagree, then refute it, as did the person who (correctly) suggested that Peggy Lee was a counterexample. Tell that to Peggy Lee.
I think Diana Krall is an amazing artist with a beautiful voice. One of my favorite contemporary jazz artists- hands down.
it's not bad per se, but it doesn't pass my bar for covers. It just doesn't add anything to the original. "Whooooa-whoooa-whoooa" just isn't any kinda substitute for Waits' desperate "laddaHEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHH", and it suffers without the punch of the horns.
Thats just sad commentary and a bit over biased victoryluna wrote:

Diana's channeling Maria Muldaur here...
Not one of my favorite Waits songs but it is covered well here. I also like Holly Cole's version but this is better.
Please play the Tom Waits version!! One of my all-time favorite songs, in terms of execution. So beautifully played and recorded. Just awesome. This version just makes me miss that which makes the other so friggin' good.

This is only decent if you haven't heard Tom Waits' version. Even Tom's backup band is better.
