Wow, that opening reminded me of Diamond Dogs... shame it wasn't. No offense to REM.
REM using a drum machine - eeeeeekkkkkkk!

Uhhh...you've got a little static there, Stipe. Might want to clean that up before you release the final cut.
Obviously the static is on your end BondsLovesSteroids wrote:
I bet REM is kicking themselves over the consequences of you giving them a 6, the agony!!!
It all adds up.
The politics...a 1 or 2
The song ITSELF.... an 8 or 9
Ends up around a six. I was feeling generous.

I liked Up; I like this song; I think I'm going to have to buy Around the Sun. I'll grant that the new stuff is much different than the early days--but I'm not convinced it's all that much worse. It will be interesting to see whether this new "kinder, gentler" R.E.M. picks up new fans to replace some of the folks who are clearly running for the gangplanks. . . .

You've been a member of RP for 3 weeks dude. Why should your advice be heeded?
Okay, people, I usually stand back and let dumb people say dumb things, but this comment simply, comprehensively, takes the cake. How the FUCK does RP membership qualify a person to have a credible opinion on the quality of eclectic music? What a dumb dumb dumbass.
A lot of their stuff annoys me, but this song is OK.
Now I know what people mean when they say they used to hate Tori Amos but now they love her. Because I used to love REM, and now I hate them.

Because they don't have a flaming head with his tongue in his cheek. I'm rarely serious in these boards.

Gee, I thought we already had a "hell" theme earlier today. Banish these self-important phonies forever to outer darkness. They're just too puke-ific.

Wow, opening chords sound like 'WELCOME TO THE MACHINE'...

They sure do...

That's the ticket. Right up to Automatic for the People (in my opinion anyhow).
Co-sign :) That album was nearly perfect. I think it's just practically impossible to top it...
Their greatness ended with "Lifes Rich Pageant" and I am still listening to my worn out tape (this is one that I never replaced on CD) that I just can't part with. This is one of those really great "complete" albums in which no one song should be played on it's own, it MUST be played in it's entirety- like Bookends, Storyville, and Nebraska.

They haven't done much in the way of compelling music since.

Well, Murmur and Reckoning set the bar pretty darn high. This isn't compelling, but I kind of like it.

My God - how much REM can one radio station play? There are much better groups - give some others a chance Bill.
I'm not a huge REM fan, but I really LIKE this. It is a "kinder, gentler" REM. I CAN understand why the fans who liked the harder version of REM might be disappointed.

I have to say also as a long term REM fan that I really love it - not sure what people were looking for but I found what I was ;-)

Yeah, but it still sounds REM.. just a little more "gentle"
Song is ok, but they got a long way to go to reach the quality of Automatic for the People
This sounds a bit better than most anything else I've heard from them in awhile.
