I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to

Oh well

Now, when I talked to God I knew he'd understand
He said, "Stick by my side and I'll be your guiding hand
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to"

Oh well

Deep Purple is certainly in the Pantheon of rock gods!
These guys are awesome and simply gods - that‘s it
Why do we keep hearing this version--repeatedly--but never hear the original Fleetwood Mac version, which IMHO is better? Even if William likes this version better, it still seems like he could mix things up a bit with the Peter Green version...
Covers covers covers!!  All I hear on RP!!
Not a patch on the original but worth a listn

The funeral bell dirge bit at the end is interesting but I prefer FM or Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon's take.

Pretty good idea for DP to cover this. Not terribly creative execution. Fun, tho'.

Old dudes still in the game.

Hey, you're in till you fade away. That's why I'm believing in rebirth!

i swear i was listening to the rock mix friday, this was on it. lots of repeats from friday's rock mix again today, but i'll take it. the main mix was putting me to sleep this morning.
Lyrics for middle-age:

I can't sing, I'm all wrinkled, and my belly's big.
But don't ask me what I think of you ...
This is smoking hot!
The end guitar part reminds me of Trans Siberian Orchestra!

Nah man!  Anything by Deep Purple is automatically more than 7.2!
Anyhow, i prefere the original version. Fleetwood Mac had the better guitars.
As some have mentioned below, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac recording is definitive.  You should play that instead, it has nuance.  This version is just loud and fast.

IMHO the Fleetwood Mac version of this song is superior, but Deep Purple rates a 'pretty good' on it...because, well...it's Deep Purple!
7 points for the idea for this cover, plus 1 for the organ. Minus 6 for the the guitar noodling at the end
As covers go, this is not bad but you can't beat the Peter Green original
Played too often. Time to retire this old hat.
y tho
Saw them live a few (10?) years back.  The worst gig I have ever been to .  They didn't seem to notice there was an audience there.
Steve Morse is playing the hell outa that thar geek-fiddle!   Awesome indeed!!!
A brave choice both by Purple and Bill !!
Much better than it could have been....

Please play Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac's version for those who may not have heard it :)
Steve Morse playing Peter Green - wow

Couldn't agree more!

This was my second concert on their "First Reunion" tour for the Perfect strangers album.  It still has that classic DP sound.  Ian Gillians voice has evolved but it's not bad just different.  I mean he must be in his mid-late 70s?  Yup 76.  Jus checked.  I hope to karaoke that well at 76!

Yeah, well OK.
I love the old Purple, and I love this song, but Gillan's vocals let this down IMHO
It sounds stripped down and honest. I like it. The vocals have grown on me and for some unknown reason I appreciate their maturity...

Steve Morse can shred! First time I saw him was in early 70's with Dixie Dregs playing in a bar I was part owner of. Another band for Bill to explore.

Yes, we could use some Dregs here...
c.

I thought this was something along the lines of Hayseed Dixie...

Has Ian Gillan been living in Alabama?

Missing 6 more minutes
Original is way better. Leo Kotke's is better. I liked this one until the vocals started. Guitar riffs are solid though.

Sweet 'n Amazing sound.  Thought they quit recording years ago; good to hear new music!

And that is the great, and I mean THE GREAT Steve Morse on guitar

I had no idea Deep Purple covered this. Pretty good. But for me The Rockets 1979 cover remains the best. Oh well.

The Rockets absolutely NAILED it. It is the standard in my book.
Purple,  2021 and going - just wow. A shining example for most I recon.

Illustrates perfectly my thoughts about this cover.

Guitar sounds great but then again is almost an exact copy. And worse, they forgot to bring a teaspoon for the percussion.
I was enjoying it until the terrible "singing" started.  Went from a decent 7 to a 4 and PSD.
BillG played the original a few hours ago, "What? Again...wait....who is this? Deep Purple...must be new...wow very."

Decent for a bunch of septuagenarians, tho Jon Lord is missed. RIP Jon.
Steve Morse's guitar Rocks on this version...
Holy smokes.  No hush in this group.
For me, this cover doesn't add anything new to this song. In my opinion, it lacks intensity. Two of my favorite covers of this tune are the Black Crowes & Jimmy Page's version on Live at the Greek and the recent YouTube video by Haim. Actually, I like Haim's cover the best, as it really rocks!

I'll join you friend.
I had no idea Deep Purple covered this. Pretty good. But for me The Rockets 1979 cover remains the best. Oh well.
Great! Like Keith Richards & Iggy Pop, these guys are like the Energizer Bunny! They just keep going on!
It gets a 7 just for Steve Morse's solo.
Where is Ritchie ?
Wow!!! This is a thing? Who knew?
The album cover is worth an 8 alone.

I was listening from across the studio and  thinking to myself, who is this? And then this smoking guitar lead comes in and I had to get up to see. Wow. Love it!
I'm giving it an 8 for the album cover alone!

Woot! First comment!  Great rendition of one of their early songs!!!

It was Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac's 'early song', though not a bad rendition
Sweet 'n Amazing sound.  Thought they quit recording years ago; good to hear new music!

I kind of agree with you but it makes me feel a bit mean minded doing so.

I would however like to hear more tracks from this album!

I think you've missed the point.
when they get to the guitar solo, they blow the lid off this song.  i would say they definitely "Purplized" this one.  i dig.
I love (old) DP so am very unsure of this.  Need more listens possibly. Starting off at a 5

What do I think about this BillG?   9
Awesome!
