Interesting, these ladies have a history of singing backup for Roger Waters on a few shows, and he did a duet with them on their acoustic compilation album.

It's an effect that's quite fashionable right now -- hard clipping followed by a notch filter or filters that's supposed to remove the harsh byproducts of said clipping. It's a way of getting the vocals to penetrate a dense mix, and to add a sense of "edginess". Often the amount applied will be increased during the chorus or hook on a song to make it jump out when the whole mix is already turned up to 11.
I freakin' hate it, in almost all settings. On moody dance or electro-pop, in small doses, it can be kinda cool. But it's often way overused. Like here.
