They'll only smile to see you while your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say?
Look around you find the ground
Is not so far from where you are, but not too wise
For down below they never grow
They're always tired and charms are hired from out of their eyes
Never a surprise
Take your time and you'll be fine
And say a prayer for people there who live on the floor
And if you see what's meant to be, don't name the day or try to say
It happened before
Don't be shy, you learn to fly
And see the sun when day is done, if only you see
Just what you are, beneath a star
That came to stay one rainy day in Autumn for free
Yes, be what you'll be
Please beware of them that stare
They'll only smile to see you while your time away
And once you've seen what they have been
To win the earth just won't seem worth your night or your day
Who'll hear what I say?
Open up the broken cup
Let the goodly sin and sunshine in, yes, that's today
And open wide the hymns you hide
You find renown while people frown at things that you say
But say what you'll say
About the farmers and the fun
And the things behind the sun
And the people 'round your head
Who say everything's been said
And the movement in your brain
Sends you out into the rain
Try KEXP from Seattle also!
One of my go to stations but thanks anyway
Larry this station and WFMU and the current out if Minnesota have made me go away from commercial radio, LLRP
Try KEXP from Seattle also!
One of the many artists I would never have heard of if not for this 'radio station'. I'm grateful.

I heard this song today, and was moved again. I just love the fascinating chords, and his understated delivery. Gone at 26? Far too young.
Now, one of my superpowers is that I can hear the shape of guitar chords, so I knew that the verse was something like Am / E7 / Fsomething / E7, with the chorus going to an A / D/A / C/G / D/F# pattern .. and tonight I got a chance to try that out. I was also able to confirm that Nick recorded this song with the capo on the fourth fret.
So eventually (so many gorgeous chords!) I had to sidle over to Amazon and order three of his CDs. The best part is that a gift card I received for my birthday from my employer (back in April) covered the whole expense. Wow.
Thanks, Bill & Rebecca, for expanding my musical universe. I am richer for joining this community. Peace and Love.
Nice. He seldom used "standard" tuning on his guitar, so figuring out a lot of his other tunes may be a little challenging.

Check that your "playlist" is synched with the audio. Sometimes they get un-linked.
It's melancholic for sure. He does offer a brief flash of optimism, which makes it all the more melancholic.
+1 to 9.

Timeless
Clean your ears ... it's Nick
Clean 'em
Love me some Nick
Where?
In short, I dig it.
Well then its about high time you changed your forum name to something like... IhateSomeSongs... or better still... ILikeSomeSongs
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you
I was wondering the same thing.
Yes, that is where I first heard him. It was shocking to me that I had not been exposed to him in the 70's. Apparently, that was the case in general because I believe he died and then achieved a posthumous success.
Give it a 10 but to yourself a 1
45 years old and every bit as timeless today as it was then. He had the gift.
Um, isn't that the definition of "timeless"?
Happy 64th Birthday, Bill! Keep a spring in your step! This song is soooo gooood for the ears..
No offence intended Lazarus but you are clearly bonkers! The worrying thing for me is I enjoy your posts. Not sure that says about me?

In a way, but his music was also rooted in the old, British folk music traditions. Time can be kind of circular.
Giving it a 10 three times in a row does not increase the rating you know
It just went from 9 to 100 here
Sitting in a coffee shop in a hutong -one of these typical streets of the old city, close to the Lama Temple in Beijing- opposite side of the world, and yet, this in my ears suddenly sends me back to an afternoon, in a small village of France somewhere end of the 70s, during summertime, the first time I heard it. When "free radio" meant good music, zero advertisement, and excellent journalism.
Hopeless, but still a 10.

Wow ... I was thinking "this is a beautiful song" ... Your testimonial has taken my thinking to a higher pitch. Thank you for sharing and I hope your son is better now!
I've just recently heard the story of Nick Drake - he's kind of like the Ian Curtis of his time. I found a documentary on YouTube - pretty interesting.
The original emo.
Amen
except that he died in 1974
Wow, the more I heard the more I raised my vote. Much respect for Nick Drake.
We need rock n roll.
This Nike Drake stuff is for falling asleep in a field of grass. Zzzzz
Nothing like a little Nick Drake on this cloudy, melancholy afternoon.
I love Radio Paradise. Where else can I hear a set like this?
Thank you.
His music is special and so beautiful! It is sad he became
more famous after his dead. But he will live on through his music.
One of my favorite artists. And RP is the only station where we can hear him.
I love RP too!

And you have a dirty mind, sirdroseph.
It's scary, but it's a talent, and not too many artists have it. I miss you, Nick Drake. I have some hurtful places your music never got a chance to touch...

That reminds my of a Banksy.
In the end someone, somewhere probably will be wowed by that which may of been easily pasted by another.
Actually I will take it a step further, if it is loved by a lot it probably sucks! If it is loved by a discerning few, it is probably good. This song is wonderful BTW. 9
Sadness incarnate, it never fails to touch me - 10

Couldn't agree more.

Yeah, but it's only .89 ! Buy it!
Hey, Winnipeg isn't exactly Las Vegas either!
... too true!
And in Cleveland he would have died of boredom. Not an overdose.
Hey, Winnipeg isn't exactly Las Vegas either!
I can't hear how that captures an English melancholy as opposed to, say, a Cleveland melancholy. Except in Cleveland, his name would have been Nick Drakinsky.
And in Cleveland he would have died of boredom. Not an overdose.
Nick Drake was a rare talent indeed.
He could do no wrong.
Some debate as to whether it was accidental or not. I believe it was accidental, but there is no denying his troubled spirit.
A beautiful song.
Sad indeed.
Looks like Bill and the listeners at RP like his work very much...

So writing yesterday is the definition of fine art? I guess you are more of an optimist than I'll ever be. And I'm pretty optimistic.
