Out of here
We're out of here
Along with fear
There goes the fear again
There goes the fear

And cars speed fast
Out of here
And life goes past
Again so near
There goes the fear again
There goes the fear

Close your brown eyes
And lay down next to me
Close your eyes, lay down
'Cause there goes the fear
Let it go

You turn around and life's passed you by
You look to ones you love
to ask them why?
You look to those you love
to justify
You turned around and life's
passed you by
Passed you by, again

And late last night
Makes up her mind
Another fight
Left behind
There goes the fear again, let it go
There goes the fear

Close your brown eyes
And lay down next to me
Close your eyes, lay down
'Cause there goes the fear
Let it go

You turn around and life's
passed you by
You look to ones you love
to ask them why?
You look to those you love
to justify, why?
You turned around and life's
passed you by

Think of me when you're coming down
But don't look back when leaving town
Think of me when he's calling out
But don't look back when leaving town
Think of me when you close your eyes
But don't look back when you break all ties
Think of me when you're coming down
But don't look back when leaving town today

There goes the fear again, let it go
There goes the fear, let it go

Think of me when you close your eyes
But don't look back when you break all ties
Think of me when you're coming down
But don't look back when leaving town today

Another band I didn't know about til RP (still wish the logo was RP as it's more recognizable in a split second than the headphones are) Pretty decent. Nice break between the corny big band music I have to keep skipping as it interrupts the background music vibe.
This song always makes me think of Gomez's song Hamoa Beach.
The Brazilian styled ending just doesn't go with the main part of the song at all.  It's got a completely different vibe.
Don't you wonder sometimes, bout how they infused Sound & Vision into the end of this?
I may have mentioned this before, but: the video is amazing

I'd vote for Kingdom of Rust. But dang, it's all good. And discovered Doves via RP- thanks Bill!
Coldplay meets U2 with a dash of Icicle Works.

It is a good album, although I like their debut, "Lost Souls", better. Or maybe I just haven't given enough listen to this one.

it ain't coldplay, thank god

This is wonderful. Im from Turkey
Some don't like it. I do. It's a catchy tune groove. Great driving soundtrack. And it's definite ear worm material.
Btw RP Introduced me to this Band in 2002 and I immediately bought their CD. I'm surprised they didn't make it big, I really thought it was the most original sound I had heard in a while, probably since Radiohead, certainly since Coldplay. I know the lyrics are super Christian... but whatevs.
There was a big pause there Bill.... I'm not sure if I like it better that way or not. This just doesn't seem to segue...........
Remember back in the AM days, when the DJ would talk over, or just fade out the last 20 seconds of a song?  I wish you would do that with this song!  Better yet, the last minute.

Makes you go to cancun
with us and kitchen sink
Some say a neat song.

love the sound they make....but the lyrics cripple my mind with  marshmellow fluff

I agree - this is a superb disk.
I'll drink to that!

It sounds more like a "ii–IV–I–V" progression in the chorus, but does that really matter?

Ironic isn't it? Your comment could have been made by any number of people regarding any number of songs, without any reference to anything more than the chord progression! Creativity in commentary is dead, I suppose.
Great segue, however this Doves song is not my favorite...

Drone, drone, drone, blah, blah.
i was just thinking about this song and here it is.

I enjoy most of their stuff but I find his voice very dreary and flat, especially on this one.
Sounds like a Cold Play song?
So that's what those little hooting things from the end of Paul Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" are doing these days. Nice to know they're getting work.
apemusic...{#Lol}
perfect 7...
Here's the group who never jump higher than 5 for me.
Good band, good tune - this is one of their finest! {#Yes}
I miss the Doves.

God damn! That's good! Solid 9.

I changed my mind on this one.  I like it.  It was in the film 500 days of summer.  When I heard it there I was enjoying it.

This tune has a lot of catchy grooves. Worth an 8.
The kind of song that never end...awful!!!!!!!! -1000000...........another Coldplay

I LOVE THIS SONG!!!

Not bad!

This is about the 10th song Bill has played today that has caused me to check my iTunes library. Yep, I have it. Either I really love RP or I suffer from obsessive-compusive disorder. Maybe both.
Simply put..we need more Doves.  This songs proves it.

For a few minutes I thought it was another of Bill's brilliant transitions from one song to another.

The original comment of "it doesn't really go anywhere, does it.."

Kind of ironic if you watch the video for the song. Goes from a grocery store in England to Rio!
Some music videos enhance the song. This is one of those times. I already liked the song, but after seeing the video... I flipping loved it. I'd highly recommend people check it out. It certainly "explains" the ending a little, kinda, maybe, perhaps, sorta...

I just did the same thing, 7 to an 8 because of the great drumming/percussion in this song.

nice opening hook to this one, methinks.

Great song, album..and band
Does anyone else hear that brief cord progression from A Whiter Shade of Pale?
Guster-esque. Yes, that's good.
Still one of my favorite, entirely well-rounded, albums of all times.
This guy sounds a little like Pete Yorn. This song is waaaaay better than Crystal Village though.
pure emotion
Fantastic!

I kind of like it - reminds me of Radiohead (OK and Bends), but what is up with that jungle beat thing at the end? It does not seem to fit at all.

Solid 8
I do need to lose the fear and get the F out of here!!
Doves are a great band.
This is good sitting on the toilet music.
Roller rink music.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
I really like these guys...but I don't know that I like their music as a whole enough to purchase an album...like somebody once said on this site (can't remember who or when), "I don't know that I'd buy an album full of 7's." I certainly enjoy almost everything I've heard from The Doves, but usually an album has to be full of 8's and above for my picky self to spend money on it. That way I'm more confident that I'll still dig the CD many years down the road. As a result, I've rarely sold/given away any of my music. May not work for everyone, but it works for me. Oh, and I believe that squeeky instrument sound is the "cuica."
This album in particular gives me good vibes. I 'm dissapointed that their new one hasn't caught on with me.
Love this! With their latest album being so brilliant, it's easy for this gem to get lost...but it's well worth finding again. Good video too.

This post is a sad commentary of our times. To have this song (which I gave a generous 5) be someone's favorite song of 2002 tells us how little good new music is out there. How would this song rate if it came out in 1993? 1969? It wouldn't even be in the top 100. No offense to IndiEric intended, but his post bums me out....
I dunno. It seems kinda odd to me that you would assume that everyone likes what you like and then be bummed out to find out otherwise. There's a whole lotta stuff that came out in 1969 and 1993 that plenty of people love, but I think it stinks. It seems to me that there's always stuff that I like a lot, stuff that's merely okay, and stuff that (to me) is crap. Same as it ever was.

The Doves' 2002 album repeatedly shows up on critics' Top 20 albums of the year lists. These are people who have been reviewing music for quite some time, and in all genres. It's also on my list. Could this mean there were slim pickings in 2002? I don't think so...2002 also saw the release of Beck: Sea Change, Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head, Michelle Shocked: Deep Natural, Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Neko Case: Blacklisted, and Gomez: In Our Gun, among others. As I've said before, people tend to suffer from the 'locality effect'...2002 is still too close to the present to offer any perspective. I'll wager any amount you'd like that in 30 years you'll look back on the 00's fondly and reminisce the way you do now over 1969. Still an excellent tune, and album, in my book.

Perhaps the post you responded to, together with your own, are really just testaments to how greatly musical tastes can vary. It's not as though there's any rational standard for "good new music" by which you or anyone else can measure a given song or band. Sorry you're bummed, but I think you'll be okay.

I think it's a Cuica, which works on the exact same principle! And you don't have to buy anything from "mickey D's".

This was my favorite song of '02. The way it builds throughout, always driving, but never raucous, is just incredible. I thought the album had a couple of weak moments in the middle, but 4 or 5 of the best songs on any album that year (especially this, Pounding, & Sulphur Man). Great stuff. Can't wait for the next one.

The last 4 tunes make a cool sentence- There goes the fear-Walking to Hawaii, I am a rock, the best of Jill...hives. :fight.gif:

Coldplay is getting sleepy...sleeeeeepy. I like it, though.

what a great segue out of the simon and garfunkel -- unexpected but lovely.

I'm glad I stuck around for the whole song. I was indifferent at first, but by the time it ended I was writing down the name of the song and album to add to "The List". Very nice song! I need a second job to afford all of this music....

U2? tears for fears? billy joel!?!?! TOM PETTY!? i have no idea what you guys are listening to, because i'm obviously listening to something different. i do hear the chicago reference at the end, though. i like it. heh.
The way the song builds to a thunderous, but not overblown climax, is truly stunning. It does not feel like it is 7 minutes long, only your CD timer shows that
