This particular song always reminds me of the crazy genius of Keith Moon's drumming. It's just non-stop in Bargain.
Freaking outstanding song. So much amazing music that came out of 1970-1971.
Too bad the car dealers got hold of this song in the 1990s and stuck it in all their TV ads. :(
A few miles from me...Chipping Norton, where Keith Moon owned a hotel, the Crown and Cushion, Chipping Norton Studio, lots of famous stuff recorded there and in nearby Stow-on -the -Wold, John Entwistle's old country mansion Quarwood. Cotswolds are cool 😎
Close to discharge from military. Past Vietnam. So much a part of the tapestry.
Listening to this you may understand where John Entwhistle got the nickname “Thunderfingers”!

Wow. Back when I first heard this album in the late 70s, a friend (and diehard Who fan) told me the reason for the cover photo was because the band was pissed at Kubrick for deciding to do some other movie than one he had promised to do for The Who. But this article contradicts that explanation:

Y'all can decide for yourselves -- Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, other -- but this is my favorite album by my favorite rock and roll band. Not my favorite BAND of the genre, because when it comes to hooks and tunes and memories, it's the Beatles. But it might be argued that the Beatles, though the kings of the rock and roll universe, rocked but didn't always roll, rolled but did not always rock, whereas The Who -- on Who's Next at the least -- largely DEFINED and/or EXCELLED at both.

I have to admit to not being that big of a fan. I think that Pete guy is a bit of a c**t. But I sure do like the drummer.

As a 12 year old girl, this album forever changed the way I listened to music. Except for buying Meet the Beatles when I was 6, I'd say these tunes had a life changing impact on me. I remember sitting in front of my record player and just listening to it over and over. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Bill.

Pete - the orchestrator - knew who he had in Keith and John and he constructed the perfomances so that their job was not like 95% of all rock rythm sections - to hold down the beat.
As for the songs - brilliantly conceived and structured - growing from a unique Brit version of American R& B through a unique way of telling stories and delivering rythms and melodies in varying ways.
Roger - the epitome of a front man. Powerful, emotional vocals and great energy.
Their last tour and album — a triumphant comeback from a place where I agree they were just flogging for dollars and not performing as well.
As for "the allegations" Bollocks to the bullshit cops. Pete is an innocent man.

Good point well made. And exactly why I have never liked the Who. OK but just terribly overrated, weak songs, overperformed in every sense. I was thinking the same thing. Quadrophenia certainly aligns The Who with the Mods.
I was 13 when this came out. Hearing Who's Next for the first time all the way through on old-school progressive FM radio changed my musical tastes forever. Almost 40 years later I still remember sitting transfixed listening to this, and it still sends that shiver of discovery up my spine.

8. One of my favorite Who albums, although I think this is one of the weaker picks. Something about the cover speaks to them not being happy happy with Kubrick......

I like the Who but feel rather indifferent. I never really dialed in, even when it was innovative and all the rage, and very much part of the background music when I was growing up.
But I really, really like the idea of listening to a radio station that plays lots of Who.
Anybody else relate to that honda? Or do you have to be over 50? 
Interesting - I was watching the "Classic Albums" Who's Next edition yesterday. They looked to me in some of the video clips from 1966 like the worlds first punk band.
They would tell themselves that the "girls are all in the back rows, we just can't see them", but it was nothing but boys - head thrashing at the foot of the stage. A preview of the American (and British) Punk scene.
Love this vinyl.

This was the first record I ever bought, back in the early 70's. It was great, the disc was big, heavy and thick, I think it had a Decca label. Loved it! Was a big influence in my "formative years."
