Is this from Les Mis?

Good lord! Your friend needs to consult a dictionary to learn what "screechy" means. All the women you mention have beautiful voices. I admit I sometimes hear a similarity between them but you could say that about a lot of male singer/songwriters as well.
Tori Amos? Sure... Kate Bush -> Tori Amos -> Vienna Teng...
A friend of mine refers to this genre as the "screechy girls". (She just doesn't like Sopranos).
I think it's silly to say that this isn't anything like Tori Amos, it's not a bad thing, she does a nice job exploring the genre.
Cmon... is it bad that the Allman Brothers sound like a pale version of Skynnard?

I would like to hear the song stripped back quite a bit to her voice and the piano lead without all the orchestration surrounding it but that may just be because this is following ludovico einaudi and now sounds unnecessarily over-complicated with too many sounds overpowering the underlying message.
What lovely voice. Sweet. Simple. Unadorned.

Yeah...I'm totally with you on this. They're both female. Other than that, I do not see a similarity.

Where would she be without Tori Amos?

It's not my favorite of hers - but there's just something about her voice that raises an otherwise ho-hum song to higher levels.
A very effective and efficient segue from Ludovico Einaudi - Andare; I thought it was all one which made Einaudi a lonnng intro into this vocal. Nice blend!

Sounds like the soundtrack to "The Little Mermaid."
first 'sucko-barfo' i've given out in a while ...
hmmm. In spite of myself, I like this.
I. HATE. THIS.
A little "school seasonal" show tunish.

She wasn't the singing voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, was she? I'm only half kidding - sounds very similar.
...nice to hear more of this album...

Yes, she does. As I said, she doesn't like soproanos.
Funny, I seem to remember that years ago, she liked Kate Bush... now hates her. Back then, I couldn't stand Kate, now appreciate her. Go figure.
Stil, this song... not to my taste, and I find it to be highly derivative of a certain genre. So there. ;-)
(male singer songwriters... like Mark Knopfler and Gordon Lightfoot? *burp*)
