Cornell West was my college graduation speaker.  He and Robert George (as brother West mentions) have done hundreds of discussions over the years about critical thinking and the role of colleges in fostering conversation.  They are an interesting pair.

For the painfully bored, here is one such conversation that took place my daughter's freshman year (she and George attended the same college...40 years apart).

But that's not the issue, is it. As today's republicans have been schooled time and time again, the vast majority of immigrants contribute positively to the US, economically and socially.
At the very least, the US owes the impoverished, "tired and poor" an opportunity to come to this country and participate in its successes.

Do you really prefer to "piss on em"?

Some people have gotten so caught up in 'American exceptionalism', they have forgotten that it is about what we do, not an innate quality. It is a trait that can be lost if not maintained.

Also known as black-and-white thinking, polarized thinking, or dichotomous thinking, all-or-nothing thinking is a type of cognitive distortion that involves viewing things in absolute terms: all good or all bad, angelic or evil, perfection or total failure.

Let's call it Tariff Karma. What part of being ok with innocent kids dying from a preventable disease is worthy of sympathy?

Either you love America or you don’t, he says
White House counterterror czar Sebastian Gorka said today that Americans who are not on board with the Trump administration’s immigration policy are “on the side of terrorists."

“It's really quite that simple,” Gorka said in a little-noticed interview with Newsmax. “We have people who love America, like the president, like his cabinet, like the directors of his agencies, who want to protect Americans. And then there is the other side, that is on the side of the cartel members, on the side of the illegal aliens, on the side of the terrorists.”

He didn’t stop there, going on to say this is tantamount to “aiding and abetting” — which he called a crime under federal law.

“And you have to ask yourself, are they technically aiding and abetting them?” Gorka continued. “Because aiding and abetting criminals and terrorists is a crime in federal statute.” (...)

America Rendition is back!
American Rendition: Rümeysa Öztürk’s Journey From Ph.D. Scholar to Trump Target Languishing in Louisiana Cell
Öztürk, a former Fulbright scholar in a doctoral program at Tufts University, was stunned to find out in early March that she had been targeted by a pro-Israel group that highlighted an op-ed she co-wrote last year criticizing the school’s response to the war in Gaza. (...)

Her lawyers describe it as the story of a Trump-era rendition, a callback to the post-9/11 practice of federal agents grabbing Muslim suspects off the street and taking them to locations known for harsh conditions and shoddy oversight.

Öztürk is among nearly 1,000 students whose visas have been revoked, according to a tally by the Association of International Educators. And she is among several students and professors who have been detained. (...)

On March 4, two weeks before their spring break reunion, Öztürk texted her friend E. to say she’d been “doxxed” by Canary Mission, part of an array of shadowy, right-wing Jewish groups that are criticized for using cherry-picked statements and distorted context to portray even mild criticism of Israel as antisemitism or support for terrorism. (...)

Öztürk’s entry on the Canary Mission site, posted in February, claims she “engaged in anti-Israel activism in 2024,” citing the op-ed she co-wrote more than a year ago that accused Tufts of ignoring students’ calls to divest from companies with ties to Israel over human rights concerns. (...)

Öztürk, an advocate for children in communities plagued by violence, was personally heartsick over images of burned and mangled Palestinian children. But she was not a prominent activist or a fixture at campus protests, her friends and attorneys say.

Öztürk’s attorneys, who are scheduled to appear Monday before a federal judge in Vermont, say the sole basis for revoking her visa appears to be the op-ed highlighted by Canary Mission.

Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer representing Öztürk, said pro-Israel groups are providing the administration with lists of targets for its deportation campaign against noncitizen student protesters. “The sequence of events,” he said, “is op-ed, doxxing, detention.”

Pro-Israel groups, including Canary Mission, have boasted about their influence on the Trump administration’s targeting of student protesters. Immigration officials insist that they make their own removal decisions based on a number of factors, including a hard line on criticism of Israel.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says he has revoked more than 300 student visas, including for Khalil and Öztürk, under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which permits the deportation of noncitizens who are deemed “adversarial to the foreign policy and national security interests” of the United States. (...)

An internal memo, prepared days before Rumeysa Ozturk was detained by ICE agents, raises doubts about the Trump administration’s claims that she supports Hamas.

Rubio cast a very wide net:
As Secretary of State, I will continue exercising my authority to support President Trump’s zero-tolerance approach to foreign nationals who abet terrorist organizations or participate in activities that threaten our national security or compromise a compelling foreign policy interest.
If I understand correctly you are not allowed to offer material support for organizations that are designated as terrorists (unless that organization is currently favored by the US Gov like in Syria).

Which makes my point...that story or at least the headline didnt effectively cover the issue...which is more about due process than free speech.
Reminds me of a story from Fox this week about that new female sculptor that went up in San Fran.
Headline was something like people complain about the new nude sculptor as offensive, and then the video has interview of people saying they like it.

And due process is important for everyone, but it is critical for the least savory of people. If you start carving out people who you won't let the system protect, then the system is useless for protecting anyone.
