Just to mention an alternative to dropbox: Ubuntu One, see: https://one.ubuntu.com
I use it to sync reports/documents between various (Ubuntu) computers (also on my Android, no active sync, download only be request), and share files or folders with the rest of the world. 5GB free if I recall correctly, switch a safety feature off to use files larger than 1 GB. Oh by the way, seems to run on Windows as well.

Okay, I zip the files because I don't want to risk losing my dropbox. I'm sure box.net has the same rule. And I have an ftp site that's my own so I can share whatever from there, but it's another step, like you say. I use dropbox for emailing links to people, they can click to download and I can dump the file a week later and no one will miss it. I use my FTP for stuff I want to keep online for longer...

I've been using box.com for a few years now. Its easy, but wonky. I get 5 GB free with a 25 MB file size limit. That hasn't changed since the beginning. The bad thing about it is if you happen to be logged on while someone is accessing a file, they seem to have access to everything if they look hard enough.
My phones only make calls so I have no need for other functions as I only put up mp3's for sharing. The file size is a bit limiting though. I looked at dropbox the last time you mentioned it. Have to look at it again. The last time I looked at dropbox, there didn't seem to be a way to download files put up, just share them on the screen ?
I don't think I'll use box.com very often. Maybe. Haven't come up with a real need for it yet. I guess I don't understand your question about dropbox. It installs a folder called "Public" that has different sharing options than the rest of dropbox. I put something in there and right-click it (on my desktop) and it gives me a menu of Dropbox options including "copy public link." That link will allow people to download the file (dropbox does not allow mp3 sharing so zip it), or if it's an image you can use the public link to post the photo here. If you are on an alien computer and need a file, you can log into the dropbox website and upload or download any of your files. CLICK HERE TO INSTALL

Dropbox has upped their free space to 16GB max: - You can now earn twice as much free space by inviting your friends!
- For each friend that installs Dropbox, you’ll both get 500 MB of free space. You can earn up to 16 GB.
- P.S. Already invited a bunch of people? Don't worry! You'll get credited for all of them.

I do need to store my wordpress backups on dropbox, that's about all the website backing up I do. Will check the link tho... edit: I didn't quite "get it" but yeah that's sweet.

I like a lot of the features... add logo, email confirmation of download, limit availability to X days... some of that was on mobileme. I can do a lot with Dropbox but for a larger enterprise sharing a lot of files, a system like this makes a lot more sense. Example: Every week, I get an email from Saatchi with a dummy FPO pdf, plus login instructions to get into their FTP site. If I want, I can poke around the place and look at Saatchi employees' home movies etc etc. it's kind of lax. But they could instead just send out an email with download link and hey. No more photos of ad reps in the Bahamas... or mockups of Toyota products not yet released... etc.

All files uploaded to your Dropbox must be smaller than the size of your Dropbox account's storage quota. For example, if you have a free 2 GB account, you can upload one 2 GB file or many files that all add up to 2 GB. If you are over your storage quota, Dropbox will stop syncing until you are below your limit. Much appreciated. I use box.com now, but the file size limit is only 25mb, with a 5GB total. 300mb will be excellent. Most of the files I would want to upload are under 100mb.
