Its likely your old turntables if you still have them are far better quality than any USB table you can get. If you no longer have a receiver with a phono input you can get a standalone phono preamp pretty cheap and just plug it into the line input on your soundcard.

I had a lot invested in LP's so I kept the 4000+ AND bought CD's AND SACD's AND DVD-Audio....I even had laserdisc because there were some concerts that were only available in that format..

There used to be a ground wire connection involved for phono jacks as well.  Do "newer" turntables still have that?

Back then some didn't either. They used to "float" the grounds from the cartridge and ground the arm tube instead with a 5th wire. This was done to help prevent ground loops that could cause hum. Also, some preamps also floated the grounds on the phono input jacks and needed that separate ground wire.

Well *only* the phono jacks will work for phonographical recordings. Everything else you can switch around but don't plug your dvd into phono or vice versa.

It's problem is that it's tired and not all the jacks work. And the jacks are SO hard to get to in the cabinet we made for it!

It most likely has a phono input then. Yippee!

Hopefully the jacks will work and won't need cleaning, if you can get to them.

One thing Dave mentioned... be sure your amp has a Phono input. You can't plug it into the DVD's jacks.

I actually rather enjoy the lp ritual. Its kind of therapeutic and the reward is great music...That and I rip the stuff thats hard to find on CD to 24 bit flac and some I also degrade down to mp3 for uploading here so it can get insta-sorried.

Here is a write up on examining the stylus:

Examining Your Stylus

If the sylus is well worn or damaged it can ruin any records played on it.

If you have a jewelers loup it couldn't hurt to examine the stylus though. Because of my bad eyesight from the stroke I ended up getting a toy usb microscope for $15 and it works great for looking at and taking pics of styluses.

As long as your receiver/amp/preamp has a phono input there should be no problem. The stylus should still be ok if it was ok when you stored it. If it is a belt drive turntable it may need a new belt.

The fabric cleaner if its like the Dishwasher brand that was popular is good for cleaning surface debris but it wont get stuff down in the grooves. You can get a carbon fibre bristle brush for about $10 that will clean the deeper stuff. If the records have mold then they cal literly be cleaned under a tub faucet and dried with a microfiber car detail brush. Most record labels are ok with being wet but some like A&M records dont like it.

What kind of turntable and cartridge is it?
