Earlier last year, our other Kurt put up a thread about songs that referenced or honored other songs. I had just got done with Chris Rea's Road To Hell album and the song Looking For A Rainbow came to mind with its reference to Dylan's Maggie's Farm. It's a pretty cool and uplifting song that I've grown to like it as I have played the album over time. So I decided to use that to build this mix. That was about 6 months ago.
I was going to open the mix with it and soon concluded it wouldn't work for an opener because of then what happens next ? I came up empty and decided to come up with a way to get to the rainbow. Rainbows come after a rain, so I decided on starting with rain songs to get to the rainbow. Jimi and Led Zep were obvious choices. The rest came as time passed, some by playing an album and writing the song down on the list and others out of the blue. Brainstorming got me to Leon and his cover of A Hard Rain and the segue from Let It Rain where I got stuck. Leon's killer piano in the outro of LIR gave me the cover to use it. Then the Petty song came from playing the album and noticing this song along the way. Never would have thought about otherwise. And my bridge to the rainbow.
And another rainbow song discovered accidently playing an album again. Genesis, never woulda thought. Then the retread, Take Me To The River and the rest sorta took care of itself. Smoke was a cutting decision. It was this or another Leon song. The only non vinyl source. I went with William's take on the song when he said that this version was good enough to put into the library and play what he said he never would. So I'll blame it on him ;) I asked the wife if I should cut the break a leg, Frank from the end and she said leave it in. So you can blame her for that. then another self indulgent retread to bring the mix home and then another bit of Collins to get it there and the Pretenders for my Christmas song at the end.
The artwork is what it is. Never my strong suit. I typed rainmaker into an image search and came up the picture. I had no idea what a rainmaker was and that it was a musical instrument until I found this and did some research into what they are.
Hope you enjoyed it, self indulgent as it was, and thanks for 80 minutes of your time.
R I P Chris Rea who was the inspiration for this mix.
This is a true story: a friend got me a nice shirt with cartoon versions of the main three Rat Pack on it, so I wore it to Christmas dinner, where we'd invited one of my wife's friends from Nigeria. She's about 30 or so, and a wonderful person.
Later, someone asked if she knew who those three (Martin, Davis, Sinatra) were and she didn't know them at all. Wow.
Then, somehow we moved to "do you know who Elvis Presley is?" Nope
Reminds me of the time in our early dating period with Mrs Miser when talking about the Pirates of the Caribbean movies led me to say something about Johnny Depp basing his character on Keith Richards brought about an inconceivable "Who is Keith Richards?" from her.

Untainted thoughts.
A great chance to influence her badly.

I see a lot of familiar names in the original incarnation. Some not familiar at all. What happened to Not-a-Fish? Seemed he was the original initiator of the club. Crazy it's been going on for 16 years. And I was surprised to see I've been a member for 13 years! There have been times when it seemed like it would go by the wayside. Happy to see it continue. It would be great if some other older members jumped in for a spell.

Looks like 2026 is sneaking up. I'm not an original member but am curious as to how many years this thing has been going. Speaking of old members we have Serious Lee joining us for the coming year. He was a member when I first joined under a different handle but departed shortly thereafter. Welcome back!
Proposed lineup
January - Cold Miser
February - Serious Lee
March - Miamizsun
April - Kurt from LaQuinta
May - Lazy 8
initially this looks good
my only concern is tax time here in the states
feb and march are pretty heavy for me
so i'm going to give this a whirl and if i need to swap, i'll let everyone know
been proactive on optimizing work flow so i'm expecting smoother sailing
and welcome back lee
I can swap with you if you think you can do January on short notice.

We started in 2009. Lazy and I are original members. This will be my 23rd mix this month. And it should be done by the weekend (I hope) Change the post order of the thread and go back and have a look at the long history and all he different RPeeps who have participated over the years.
