This was not a standard garage band. For one, the members had picked out instruments two days earlier. For another, the jam session ended when a supervisor called, âLadies, itâs snack time.â The band formed at Girls Rock Camp in Atlanta, which teaches 10- to 16-year-old musical beginners to bang drums and windmill guitars like their rock heroes. The five-day camp has a simple message: Girls rock too. In a genre long dominated by men, the founders want campers to feel as comfortable being loud and expressing themselves on stage as many boys do... Â
I'm glad the girls are having fun but this whole type of thing perpetuates a gender divide where none needs to exist. Why a Girls Rock Camp instead of a Kids Rock Camp made up of an equal number of girls and boys? For those wanting gender equality (of which I am one) programs like this make a point of separation. Unlike athletics neither gender has an innate advantage (meaning physical bodynstrength) when it comes to musical talent, playing and enjoyment.
And yes there are more male rock stars than female but that does not mean there is a dearth of female rock/pop stars.
In the end it is fun and good for the kids but the article's tone reinforcing gender inequality does no good.
OK let the bullets fly.

Rocking Out, No Boys Allowed by Robbie Brown The New York Times July 14, 2012
ATLANTA — Asha Crews had never played a guitar before this week. But on Wednesday, she took the stage in her favorite Michael Jackson shirt, strummed a few chords and shouted, “One, two, three, four!” Then her band, Rainbow Unicorns, began to rock, playing an angst-ridden song that sounded like early ’90s grunge. “It’s all complicated, I feel so frustrated,” sang the four girls, ages 10 to 13. I have always had a crush on Charlotte Gainsbourg ever since the first time I saw her portraying Jane Eyre ; I usually don't even watch movies like that (chick flicks ) but could not take my eyes off of her and ended up watching the whole thing even putting up with William Hurt for an hour and a half or so . Anyhoo, not only do I find out she does music, but amazingly! I have been hearing her in rotation on WUSC, but DJ Otto Mayshun never puts up his playlist. I love him anyway even though being a robot, he does not love me back . So I think, who is this? Finally they play one of her tunes on a live show where they update the running playlist; I see the name, but don't put 2 and 2 and all that; till I finally get around to getting some of her stuff from her 2009 release IRM;
