I think trader joes is now owned by the discount chain Aldi ( which is Danish o think?). Looks like Tescos effort at breaking the American market with fresh and easy has failed. Glad to hear it myself, although British supermarkets are pretty impressive (except for not holding a candle to the awesome ice cream aisles in the USa) I don't want Tescos domination of the world. Try to avoid intercostal myself as they take something like 25% of the grocery market spend in this country. Now if waitrose and marks and spencer were seeking world domination I'd be all for it.

We got a Whole Foods a couple of years ago, up on the near northwest side in a swanky new commercial area. It's just like any other Whole Foods store except that it has no wine section. Stupid state law. We've checked it out but in most cases it's hideously expensive relative to what we pay at Sprouts. A Trader Joe's is something P prays for, but we're not holding our breath. Her sister back sends us occasional care packages of Trader Joe's stuff.

Never been in a WF, but have been in TJ's, both here and in SoCal, where they began.

The ones in SoCal have so much more to choose from and are as ubiquitous as 7 / 11's.  The ones that have sprouted up back east are half the size with half the selections.  The ones in SoCal do have many values and bargains.  They are more of an over priced novelty back east than anything else.

I both like and don't like that TJs has a limited selection of foods. It makes shopping fast and easy, but sometimes I get bored, so I shop at WF. I get 5 bags of groceries for the same amount that I spend at WF for 3 bags of groceries, but the stuff I buy at WF is usually "special," like organic veggies and fruit and meat.

so the solution is to park at whole foods and walk to TJsmor is across the street not quite how I am imagining it ( 15 feets or so!!!!) . It is Texas after all.

yes, TJ is in a previously empty location at one end of an almost new upscale strip mall/shopping center.  The funny thing is that across the street in the rest of the "Quarry" shopping is the Whole Foods.  Better parking but so much more expensive!  If I'm buying healthy food, I figure I should have to walk a bit to get there.

They never build, they only occupy previously built locations. And yes, they are often in places where parking is a challenge.

I have never shopped at TI, although I have a friend who loves the place. Too rich for my blood. Also, they have been busted a few times for health code violations.

I liked it. Maybe not quite as much as waitrose as I am more familiar with English supermarkets but I would very happily have survived on shopping at TJs. They had some excellent stuff, especially the mocha yoghurt. Yummy., yummy, recommended.



Quite funny looking for things like croissants much east of the coast in Washington and Wyoming. I would say French baked goods were not that popular in your average supermarket.

I think I can speak for both of us when I say that there isn't a great deal of spatial pressure in Eastern WA.

They're notorious for finding tight undesirable locations, I don't think any of them are very spacious. The one in Spokane was sort of roomy.

I'm fairly certain I'll go back.  I do need milk for the mac and cheese I bought but wasn't going straight home so I didn't buy it there.

Couple of observations:

Prices on the things I bought (only a few) were comparable to HEB.  Maybe a little bit more, but it's all organic.
