After the festival was over, Robert Randolph and Ben Harper showed up at a local bar, and joined the house band for Bill Withers' "Use Me." A nice moment. Both are very nice guys, not too keen to talk to groupie types but enjoyed being in Wyoming and were happy to talk about that. Both very gracious, and quite reserved, even on stage in the bar. I was one of about 75 people there.
Woohoo! I was one of maybe ten people who came by, and decided not to spend the three to nine bucks cover charge to get in. I'll always remember that moment. yes, you will always remember it. I still vividly remember deciding not to go to my regular hole in the wall bar after a Clapton show over 25 years ago because it was so freaking crowded because Clapton stopped by there to wind down on stage after leaving the stadium. I even had prior warning from the club - don't go anywhere but here tomorrow night.

And six free-range feral children at the ferry landing. One amateur naturalist woman knew that the river otter was a beaver. She told her children that as they plopped rocks into the river to get it to come back out of its hole. And after she told them to stop throwing rocks, they kept plopping rocks into the river by the hole. Needless to say, the otter did not make itself seen again.

So I wasn't that impressed or into it. Part of the lack of impression is due to our good seats/standing spots being overrun by a rather different crowd by the time Ben's performance was nearing. The younger-drunker-fratboy-ey crowd was joining the older/biker crowd in moving up for good viewing of Ben and the Black Crowes, and pretty much displaced all the mellower and cooler better-mannered people that I thought had been around us earlier. So we watched Ben from a good distance. Like, halfway up a mountain.
