I started to feel that way about Disney movies when M was little. Cosby was right- all a parent really wants is
quiet .

I got rid of my tv 7 years ago for the obvious reasons : damn things rot your mind. Put it out on the curb with a for free sign on it. I was instantly happier and never regretted the decision. Also, in 7 years, I have saved around $4,200 ( $50 a month for cabel x 7 years ). Then again....I don't feel deprived. You can watch ANYTHING you want on the computer anyway. On demand without paying the cable company usurious fees. The difference it is a conscious choice. Not a mind numbing drone in the background.

I can't stand it anymore.... I get the small tic in my left eye when it is on. Thankfully we can usually negotiate and he'll put on Avatar...now *that's* a cool show. IMHO

For me it's a medium: boycotting it would be like boycotting cassette tapes, or hardcovers, or unlined paper. There's plenty of dreck out there, but there's gold among the garbage.
Of course, your mileage may vary.

cable is exploitation. I miss the discovery channel, bravo, tcm, and a few others. But life is a lot more interactive without it. I was sad to have missed the olympics. But once I become more internet savvy i think that I will find the info I am missing on the TV.

We haven't boycotted, we still watch Heroes, The Science Channel and a few Food Network shows (those are for me- I admit it: I'm addicted to the competition shows), but early this year in an effort to reduce our "latte factor" (donthca love/hate buzzphrases?), we dumped all the pay cable services. We miss Weeds and I've been wishing I could watch True Blood, but other than that, I haven't regretted the decision. Unless cable goes way down in price and TV programming improves a metric f*ckton, I don't think we'll be very motivated to spend much time in front of the tube. It's a shame too- the picture quality of those huge flat-panel screens is droolingly gorgeous.
