Hey stranger!!
Do you think this quake is a case of static triggering from the Mexicali quake? Will it increase stress on the SA? Is this stating the obvious? How is my baritone?
This was an extension of the Mexicali quake on the San Jacinto fault. There have been literally thousands of quakes associated with that quake back in April. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/FaultMaps/116-33.htmlAs you can see on those maps, the one we had yesterday is right in line with all those other ones. A little further north west but still in the line. The San Andreas is on the other side of the valley (north) from these fault lines. I remember an article in a National Geographic Magazine after the big Landers/ Big Bear/ Hector Mine quakes we had back in the 90's.(all in the 7's) Someone they interviewed mentioned about the shifting of the San Andreas to the east because of the bend in the fault near L.A. (Path of least resistance). She said the San Andreas really is a hard line to define. And mentioned if you could put one foot on Las Vegas and the other on Catalina Island, you would cover the spread of influence of that fault. In fact, before and after those very large quakes, there were volcano warnings issued in Mammoth Lakes on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. Which would be the path of least resistance. "Love" waves they were indeed. And your barry tone is not very sexy.

hey, thanx! There is some good background info on the fault at USGS: Seismologists are watching two major earthquake faults in southern California. The San Jacinto fault, the most active earthquake fault in southern California, extends for more than 100 miles from the international border into San Bernardino and Riverside, a major metropolitan area often called the Inland Empire. The Elsinore fault is more than 110 miles long, and extends into the Orange County and Los Angeles area as the Whittier fault. The Elsinore fault is capable of a major earthquake that would significantly affect the large metropolitan areas of southern California. The Elsinore fault has not hosted a major earthquake in more than 100 years. The occurrence of these earthquakes along the San Jacinto fault and continued aftershocks demonstrates that the earthquake activity in the region remains at an elevated level. The San Jacinto fault is known as the most active earthquake fault in southern California. Ross Stein seems to be the man. There is a brief youtube animation of the Mamara quake he did that illustrates coulombic stress transfer quite well.

NoEnz! Great to "see" you again. It's hard to say if this event was triggered by Mexicali quake, the area is so dynamic. There's some really neat info about dynamic and static triggering if you google "coulomb failure" and "ross stein"...he's made a believer in me. I doubt an eq of M 5.4 will do much to retard or advance the SA...unless it is real close to its rupture threshold. You are not stating the obvious. If you were, we'd know how to predict earthquakes. Your baritone is brilliant.

It looks like there was little physical damage. Glad you made it alright and with humor.

Here, it was probably a 3.5 but they treat it like it was a 7.0 interviewing everybody, did you feel it? describe your 'experience' My god, a 3.5 is equivalent to a bus hitting a pothole. It deserves no more than 1 minute on the news but they drag it on, and on, and on.....
