Many cities have 'LemonBusters' and such: they have trained mechanics who go over the car and check it out. The engine replacement is probably not an issue, although you should check to see if the new engine has some warranty left on it.

At the very least, taking it to a mechanic and putting it up on the lift would help. Check along the underside body seams, for evidence of repairs. Not to say being repaired is de facto bad, but it could be used to drive the price down.

Thinking of picking up a used 2004 Sentra for my daughter.  Car has only 45000 miles on it, but...the engine was replaced under warranty back in 07 when it had 17000 miles.   I know how to do the basics - look at fluid, search for leaks/noise - but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions/caveats.  Thanks
